History is What We Make of It

Sarah A. McUmber-House

It is important to know the truth of our history, uncomfortable as it may be, so that those of us now shaping tomorrow's history can make it more palatable for our inheritors.

If you are troubled by the seeming decay and degeneration of society, you are not alone. Yes, this is a troubled time, but all times have been troubled, somewhere. If you take a good look at history, you will see that ugliness and evil have always had a major role.

One of the things that make this current time seem so much worse is that we have instant communication, and we tend to communicate the worst via the media. Also, we have the largest population ever, so even if the percentage of "evil-doers" is the same, the number of foul actions has grown proportionately.

It is important to recognise that we do not have to be dominated by the negative, and that the more good we do, the more good gets done.

Your beliefs and mine may not match, but our goals are probably very similar - to be good people and better the world we share is uppermost for many of us - we don't always get there without making errors (the original meaning of the word "sin", by the way), and we adjust our beliefs as we learn more. That is why it is so important to teach our children to respect others, all others, regardless of our differences. That will go far toward turning the history we are making right now into a more fitting past for our own children's children.
