Hammerheads are unique sharks. They have oddly shaped heads that make them appear to have a board ties across their noses. There have been several theories about these heads, the most likely of which are that the extended head helps sense prey buried in the sand, or that it may act as a diving plane and help the shark swim. There are several types of hammerheads including the Great Hammerhead(Sphyrna mokarran), which is the largest, the Scalloped Hammerhead(Sphyrna lewini), the Bonnethead(Sphyrna tiburo), the Winghead(eusphyra blochii), the Smooth Hammerhead(Sphyrna zygaena), and others. They range in size from three feet to twenty feet. Most hammerheads are not dangerous, and those that are considered dangerous have very few attacks recorded against them. There are many legemds on sharks, including the hammerheads. The Hawaiians have a wealth of shark legends. They referred to the hammerhead as kihikihi (try saying that five times fast.)
