UYIREE
DIRECTION: MANIRATNAM

Once again Maniratnam has dealt with a very sensitive subject. It seems to be he has picked up Rajeev Gandhi assassination plot and made some minor changes. In this the target is not the Prime Minister but The President of India.

Sharuk Khan and Manisha Goirala playing lead rolls. Sharuk as a Production Executive in All India Radio and Manisha as a member of a Suicide Squad. Both have done their part very well.

Movie starts with Sharuk coming across Manisha in a remote railway station while he is on his way to interview a group of people fighting for Indipendance from India. Then the story revolves around the love between both of them, her commitment to the group and her community, why she elected to become a human bomb, how she and her group takes advantage of Sharuk to plot the assasination of the President. Was she successful in doing it?...

The last half hour or so in the movie is stunning. Maniratnam has justified the stance of Manisha's character through an emotional flash back. At the same time he has developed Sharuk's character trying to divert her from the bitter past memories by extending love towards her.

The clear winner in this movie is Santhosh Sivan who has made a statement through his cinematography, that you don't need to go around the world to catch beautiful locations. It's all there in India.

Though A.R.Rahman, Vyramutthu combination has clicked together again and songs has been filmed very well most of them are not going with the flow of the movie. Who is to be blamed for this? Director or Editor? May be Maniratnam have an idea to cut out the songs and send the movie to a film festival.

The title "UYIREE" gives a feeling of a love story but without much love in the movie.

Success of this movie is totally dependent on the acceptance of the justification given to Manisha's character "MEHALA".
