Chapter 8
After checking Jendo out of the hospital, Yamcha managed to get him a decent fighting outfit for his training; it was almost a copy of Yamcha's, but it was all black instead. Yamcha then took him to his home. Kuririn arrived at noon, right on time, and the training officially began.
"I assume you can manipulate ki, so I'll skip ahead to the finer points. Do you know how to sense ki?"
"I always thought you needed a scouter to do that."
Kuririn smiled. "Most of the people we fought thought so too, but scouters aren't that accurate. If you can push your ki down, they only report what they think is your real power level. A scouter can report my power level at 5000, when it could be hundreds of times higher; and that assumption can get you killed. That's why it's important to learn to sense ki on your own."
Yamcha listened as Kuririn finished the speech, and broke in at the end. "That's the first thing we'll teach you. It's not that hard, and can help you a lot in a fight. After that, we'll move one to improving your style, teaching you some useful techniques, and start the more intensive parts of training. Hopefully, you'll have learned the main points of our course, as well as some of the finer parts."
"I still don't see how sensing ki can help in a fight."
"Simple, really. If you can sense ki without a scouter, you have a better idea how powerful your opponent is, and it's easier to keep track of him. That's why we're teaching it first. We're starting now."
It took the rest of the day for Jendo to start learning to sense ki, and it looked like the lesson would go over intof the next day as well. It wasn't a good start, as Jendo's inexperience with the idea hampered his attempts. It took him a few weeks to actually start sensing it instead of guessing. After sensing ki, they worked on fine-tuning Jendo's ki control, which only took a few days; Jendo had already done a lot of work in that area. They improved Jendo's fighting style during the middle of the second month. Jendo was skeptical about its use, but Yamcha knew from experience how much of a difference it could make. After some harsh lessons, Jendo did as well. Finally, they started gravity training at the end of the second month. The last two months seemed to rush by; soon, it would only be a few days before the bounty hunter arrives.
