These small mammals are all found in South Africa and appear to be large
rodents. However, they are ungulates (hoofed mammals) and are closely
related to the elephants. They are unique among the animal kingdom and
have an anatomy similar to that of the elephant, rhinoceros, hippopotamus,
horse, and tapir. A unique dentition is why they are placed in an order to
themselves. There is one family, 3 genera, and 6 spp.
