In November 1886 the county voted on a proposition to appropriate $15,000.00 for the construction of a new Courthouse.
Due to a misunderstanding in election ,the matter was delayed until 1889 when Judge Edwards,in the February term of court, declared that the election had been valid.
This money, together with $4,000.00 insurance on the old courthouse, was used to build a handsome two-story courthouse with turrets on four corners and a high steeple on the top.
Bricks used in this construction were made by inmates of the Missouri  State Penitentiay in Jefferson City.
Mitch and Dave Duff of Versailles and a man named Petty of Tipton built the structure.
