Religion
Islam permeates every aspect of Yemeni life . Islam
forms the basis of the constitution and the judiciary system. While Christianity
ceased to exist in Yemen probably before the 10th century. There is a small
population of Yemeni Jews still living in the northern areas of Yemen. There are
two major Islamic denominations in Yemen: the Zaydis in the north and the
Shafa’is in the south. No definite border line divides them. In religious
practices, the Shiite Zaydi and the Sunni Shafa’i denominations vary only
slightly, and both groups use the same mosques and marry each other in normal
life.
