Rhea's 66 Dart Rollover Unit

Rhea's 66 Dart Rollover Unit

This is the contraption that I used to roll the Dart onto its side. I don't have enough height in my garage to use a rotissere (sp?). There wasn't enough room for the required height of the car and for the roof to clear the bar that would connect the two ends as it swept through. Besides, this was a heck of a lot cheaper!

The "cradle legs" mount in front at the rear K member mounting holes. The rear cradle mounts in the front leaf spring pearches. The mounts look a little out of center of the arc... that's for clearance sake. I needed the body of the car as close to the ground as possible. I didn't have to take down any lights or the garage door opener to get it to roll over onto the flats. It was actually very easy to do.

It won't sit very flat while its on the round section but I won't be doing much work on it then anyway.

Here are the bars installed. They can flip from side to side but when I welded them up, I forgot about the angle of the frame that the front bar bolted to. When flipped, the front bars flat area, leans a little towards the rear. This hasn't caused any problems with the car sitting verticle.

AT LAST!! It's over!!

Well, I have to admit, I had some help with it. I came up with the basic design and took it to my father and uncle (both ingenious fabricators) who happen to do a lot of handrail fabrication. My original design was to have two flat sections so that I could still work on the car when it was horizontal. They told me that it would be hard to roll with a 90 degree bend so they came up with the sweeping arc thing. As far as the mounting... 1/2" plate out in the rear with gussets that wrap around the tubing and 2" angle up front. "Hell for stout!" The tubing is just high tensile "SS40" fencepost (1.5" ID, 1 7/8" OD) with strap on the short sides for a "comealong" which is how we raised it. A little hint... have some anti skid rubber (or floormats in my case) handy because the steel will want to slide on concrete if you pull from the opposite side. If you pull straight up, it will rock but you'll have to force it to roll over.
