Characteristics: "Beefsteak Plant." Resembles basil. Has cinnamon-mint scented, green or purple foliage, often wrinkled. Grows 3 feet high and bears pink flowers in late summer.

Growing Information: Grow in rich but well-drained soil and full sun to light shade. Space plants a foot apart.

Cultivars: 'Crispa' has attractive, extra-crinkled leaves.

Propagation: Sow seeds outdoors in warm soil or indoors 8 weeks before the last spring frost. Seeds need light to sprout.

Possible Problems: Deadhead to prevent invasive self-sowing.

Harvesting and Using: Use as an accent plant. Fresh foliage is used in oriental cuisine; but its safety has been questioned, so consume in moderate quantities.
