Notes
for HENRY
CLAY FLETCHER:
Henry was born during the famiy's move from TN to Texas; they
paused
in Ellis County for a short time in August of 1882 for his birth.
There is no
record of their ever having lived there.
It is believed that while Henry's family paused in Ennis, Ellis
County,
Texas for Henry's birth. The family buired another of their
children.
This would have been the 2 year old George A. Fletcher. It was in
1883
they lost another child in Kaufman County, Texas. Charles P.
Fletcher.
Charles is the child buried in the small grave next to his
parents.
Henry was 8 years old when his parents died. After their deaths
(1889 &
1890), it is thought that he lived with his older sister Ida for
a short
time and that he was sent out to work while still a young boy.
Although
he is not listed in the 1900 Texas Census, it is believed that he
was living
with and doing farm work for his older brother, Benjamin Franklin
Fletcher
in Hamilton Co, TX. Benjamin Franklin and his young wife Allie
lived on the
farm next to that owned by Frank W. Lawrence. In 1904, Henry
married Effie
L. Lawrence, daughter of his brother's neighbors, Frank and Jane
(Gregory)
Lawrence.
Henry moved his family to Rogers, Roosevelt Co, NM in 1931/32.
The oldest
two boys, Dee and Clay had already left Texas for New Mexico
where they
had heard there was cheap land available for farming.
Soon afterwards, Henry became too ill to continue working his
Texas farm,
so he brought his family to New Mexico where his two older sons
had settled
on small farms near Rogers, in Roosevelt County. He would suffer
from an
ulcerated stomach for the rest of his life. The family traveled
by horse
drawn wagon as they could not afford to bring their large family
by train,
nor to ship their household goods. Neither Henry or Effie his
wife ever
learned to drive, and never owned a car in their life time.
Times were very hard, and the oldest children were sent out to
work in other
people's homes or on their farms. The oldest son Dee had married
Gladys
Tollett in 1927, and in 1933 their daughter Catherine was born.
Gladys
lived only a few days after the baby was born. Effie, Dee's
mother took
over the care of the infant until Dee married a second time. To
help
support the family, Effie then went to work in a Dry Cleaners in
Portales
running the big pressing machine.
By 1941, at the beginning of World War, 2, Henry's family started
looking
toward California for work. There was little or no work to be had
in New
Mexico. However, the war time economy was booming in California,
and the
Torrance/Wilmington area of Los Angeles County was looking for
workers.
Henry, who was very ill with an ulcerated stomach, could no
longer work. He
and Effie moved to Los Angeles to be near their son Clay and
their younger
daughter Myra Alyene, and her husband Ted Thompson, who had found
work
in the Ship Yards. Once in Los Angeles, Effie was able to go to
work in a
restaurant to help support the family. In addition, for extra
income, she
baked all the pies and cakes the restaurant offered for dessert.
After the war, about 1945, Henry and Effie left Los Angeles and
moved to
Loma Linda, in San Bernardino County, California to be near their
daughter
Edith and her family. Henry raised rabbits to sell for food and
for their
skins, and raised a fine vegetable garden, but was still too ill
to work. Effie
could not find work in Loma Linda, they became dependant on
Edith's
family and lived with them for a while.Llater, with the help of
their son
Ted and their daughter Edith's husband, Sam Belcher, they were
able to
buy a small house on the same street where Edith's family lived.
They remained there until Henry died of stomach cancer in 1951.
