IHS Harriers Sweep to Victory

The boys and girls each win at Mendon Ponds Park.

The Irondequoit boys and girls cross country teams swept to victory last Tues. on the 3.0-mile Mendon Ponds Park East course. The Irondequoit boys won over Churchvill-Chili(25-34),East Irondequoit(17-46), and East Rochester(20-39). Alex DiVirgilio won the race in 17:17 as Chad Pawley of Churchville placed second on 17:34. Eagle teammate Andrew Detty was third in 17:38. The rest of the Irondequoit runners to earn points were: Mark Lanigan (7th), Mark Hernberg(9th), Skylar Brunner (12th), Willian Juda (13th), and Andrew Nadeau(14th). The eagles are 2-0 in the division and 9-1 overall.
"I was very pleased with our performance this week," said Irondequoit boys coach Matt Tytler."Times continue to improve and I felt we really did a nice job competing against the other schools this week. We beat a very good Churchville team with our overall depth, by placing five runners in front of their fourth man. Alex ran a solid race extending his league meet undefeated streak to a third week. Andy Detty ran his career best time on the Mendon East Course. Bill Juda and Andrew Nadeau continue to improve with strong performances."
The Irondequoit girls cross country team continues to show strength in each of their recent meets. At last Tuesday's race at Mendon Ponds Park East, Churchville chile's Meghan Rowcliffe was first to cross the finish line, but Irondequoit swept the meet 27-28 as Emily Quinlan (20:50) and Megan McHugh (21:55) finished second and third for IHS. Maureen Jones (7th) was the third Lady Eagle to finish, followed closely by Jennifer Ford(10th) and Christine Braggins(11th). The other Irondequit finishers were Stephanie Cancilla (15th), Rachael Harvey(16th), Emily Kieliszak (18th), Lisa Philippone (19th), Jessica McHugh (20th), Amanda Grabowski(23rd), Jessica Rainey (24th), and Jordan O'Brien (29th).
"This was definitely a team effort on all the girls," said Irondequoit girls coach Ray Manuszak. All thirteen of my runners did an amazing job. We have six brand new members on the team this year and more than half of the girls are sophomores and freshman. Although they're young, the kids have really bonded together and are all improving and getting stronger as our season progresses."
