IHS runners win 2 of 3 meets

The Irondequoit boys and girls cross country team each won two of the three dual meets last Tuesday at Mendon Ponds Park West 3.0-mile course. The boys beat Greece Athena 21-36 and Webster Schroeder 15-49, but lost to R-H 23-32. Teddy Quinn of R-H captured first in 16 minutes, 12 seconds. Alex DiVirgilio was the first Eagle runner to cross the finish line as he placed third in 16:35. Eagle teammate Andrew Detty came in fifth in 17:04. The other top seven IHS finishers included Mark Lanigan seventh (17:16), Mark Hernberg 10th (17:47), William Juda 13th (17:55), Skylar Brunner 14th (17:59), and Rob Hawkins 21st (18:27). "Irondequoit boys cross country had another solid week of racing," said boys coach Matt Tytler. "Mark Lanigan had a break through performance finishing seventh in the race in a time of 17:16. This is his best time of the season and his top time on this course. I am very excited about Mark's continued progress and improvement this season. "Alex DiVirgilio and Andy Detty continue to lead the team finishing third and fifth in 16:35 and 17:04 respectively. We also had break through races from Bill Juda (17:55), and Skylar Brunner (17:59). They turned in great races and we look forward to continued improvement. Though we were defeated by a very good Rush-Henrietta team, we continue to be unbeaten in our division (4-0) with wins over Webster Schroeder and Greece Athena. Our overall record is 11-2." The Irondequoit boys cross country team placed second last Friday in the Irondequoit-Penfield Invitational at Harris Whalen Park (View Full Race Results) last Friday. The Patriots placed first with 57 points as the Eagles were second with 97, seven points ahead of third place Pittsford Sutherland. Mark Stevens of Sutherland won the 3.1-mile race in 16:51. DiVirgilio was Irondequoit's top finisher in eighth place in 17:26 as Detty was ninth in 17:35. The other top seven place runners for Irondequoit included Lanigan 13th (17:56), Hernberg 32nd (18:39), Juda 35th (18:44), Brunner 41st (18:50), and Hawkins 55th (19:05. "We walked home with two trophies this week, second place in the varsity race and third place in the varsity B race," said Tytler. "The team turned in some of their best performances of the season and career. Sophomore Andrew Nadeau won the varsity B race in a time of 18:43. His best 5K race to date. Senior Peter Fantigrossi broke the 20 minute barrier for the first time in his career running 19:35." Other top seven finishers in the varsity B race were: Jim Scott 16th, Eric Micheli 31st, Ben Levine 32nd, Peter Luciano 35th, and Patrick Nadeau 38th.

Lady Eagles Results


The Irondequoit girls cross country won two of three meets last Tuesday at the Mendon Ponds Park West course as Emily Quinlan and Megan McHugh finished 1-2 for the Lady Eagles. Quinlan's time was 19:28 with McHugh running in 20:24. Irondequoit downed Webster Schroeder 15-50 and Greece Athena 23-44, but lost to Rush-Henrietta 25-32. The other point-getters for IHS included Maureen Jones 10th (21:57), Jennifer Ford 15th (22:53), Christine Braggins 16th (22:55), Rachael Harvey 22nd (23:57), and Crystal Cody 26th (24:42). At the Irondequoit-Penfield Invitational (View Full Race Results)last Friday, the Lady eagles placed fourth with 178 points. Honeoye Falls-Lima took first with 36 points as Penfield was second with 93. Quinlan again led the harriers with a fifth place finish as McHugh came in 21st, Jones 40th, Ford 54th, and Braggins 58th. In the varsity B race, Emily Kielszak and Stephanie Cancilla finished 1-2 for Irondequoit in 21st and 22nd place, respectively. Lisa Philippone came in 35th with Jessica McHugh 40th and Amanda Grabowski 51st.
