IHS Harrier Qualifies for State

The Fairport girls cross country team captured the Class AA Section 5 state championship for the second straight season Saturday. The Raiders finished with 39 points on the course at Marcus Whitman High School to edge second-place Penfield. Fairport earned the right to represent Section 5 at next Saturday's state meet, also at Whitman. Amanda Griggs of Hilton won the race with a time of 19:25, followed by Meghan Rowcliffe of Churchville-Chili, Lauren Ferrimani, Laura Cass and Laura Straw and Megan Goetz, all of Fairport and Vanessa Love-McCarthy of Penfield. Fairport also won the Class AA boys title, edging Rush-Henrietta 59-52. The top finishers were Teddy Quinn of Rush-Henrietta, Connor Martin of Fairport, Tim Katlic of Penfield, Alex DiVirgilio of Irondequoit, Matt Deady of Fairport, Chad Powley of Churchville Chili, and Will Haskell of Churchville-Chili. "After an up and down season for Alex DiVirgilio, he finally put it all together," said Irondequoit boys coach Matt Tytler. "Alex has battled a hip injury and now a shin injury but he didn't let those things both him this weekend. This was by far Alex's best race of the season and his carreer. He ran his own race getting to the mile mark in 5:15 and was in about 50th place. Over the next two miles Alex did what we talked about all week 'come from behind and run with heart.' "He steadily moved through the pack picking off runners one by one. With about 1200 meters left in the race, Alex had worked his way into the top five and ended up finishing fourth overall. His time was 17:00.4, which was 17 seconds better than last year. Alex earned his second sectional patch in as many years." Brighton captured the Class A girls title with 33 points, better than one half than that of second-place Webster Thomas. The top seven finishers were Taryn Hand of Brighton, Krisen Bowhers of Greece Athena, Sandra Goeltleman of Spencerport, Alyssa Richie of Webster Thomas, Karen Campbell of Brighton, Kelly Coulon of Thomas and Elisha Gielo of Brighton. Brighton also won the boys Class A crown with 62 points to 74 for Athena. Dave Harris of Arcadia was the individual champion, followed by Anthony Wind of Athena, Derek Zellefrow of Thomas, Joey Friedman of Brighton, Matt Densmore of Canandaigua, Sean Brinkman of Spencerport and Matt Telban of Athena. Section 5 sends the top team and top five individuals among both Class AA and A to states. Fairport won the right in both boys and girls. The five individual girls representatives will be Griggs, Rowcliffe, Love-McCarthy, Hand and Katie Elliot of Penfield. The five individual boys representatives will be Quinn, Katlic, DiVirgilio, Harris and Powley.
