Mocha Madness

It’s that time of year again. The time when birds start their journeys back east,
and when couples start thinking about their plans for Valentines Day. However, for
the theatre department the time of year has rolled around again for the drama club
members to do another performance of Mocha Madness Improvisational Theatre.
Improv Theatre is a type of theatre that is similar to popular television shows
such as Saturday Night Live and Who’s Line Is It Anyways. Mocha Madness holds the
setting of a coffeehouse where the audience actually gets to sit on the stage, with the
 actors on a higher platform.
One hundred seats are available on the nights of March 6th, 7th, and 8th (with times
still to be determined). Anyone who is interested in attending one of these
performances is urged to keep and eye open for ticket sales and to buy his or her ticket
 early at the bookstore.
To prepare for the performance, the drama club members who plan to participate
are required to attend at least two of the workshops and the rehearsals. Between 40 and
50 people get involved with Mocha Madness each year. These people attend the
workshops in which they are trained by Director John Brady and taught improvisational
skills and techniques for quick thinking. The actors will also gain experience
in acting without taking up too much of their time as well as learning to develop
a variety of characters.
The actors’ learning to develop a variety of characters should come in handy
considering about half of the shows content will come from suggestions from the
audience. The other half will come from materials from the workshops.
In the past, the scenes were mainly about coffee and the audience even
had coffee to drink, ‘but the audience wanted water or pop’.
“I think they’ve been really good,” says Producer Alice Gambel in regard to
past performances. Gambel feels improv is ‘an excellent exercise to get people
moving’, and expects those involved to be as good as they can be.
