Les Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry


During the middle ages (as well as before and after), manuscripts were written out by hand, and decorated by hand. A stunning art form exists in the collection of the many enluminures, or illuminated manuscript pages, available for view in museums around the world today. My real favorites are richly decorated with jewel-toned blues, reds, and greens, with the liberal accenting of liquid gold. No print or scanned image of an enluminure can do it justice, they need to be seen in person. I especially love those from the early medieval period in France, and first saw them on display at the Cluny Museum in Paris (see link on Artonline! page).
