Mullen Family Tree

Notes

11. Ellen"Aunt Nell" MULLEN-16

Laveta (Burdett) Mullen said that "Aunt Nell" had a soft Irish brogue. Her father spoke Irish, her second husband spoke Irish, so I would imagine she possibly sounded like she too, had came from Ireland. Aunt Nell told the 1900 census taker that her father spoke 'Irish'. Laveta said she loved to hear Aunt Nell talk.
She would call young women "colleen's" -- Irish for girl/lassie/woman. Her footstool was called a "cricket".

When she died, she had a very nice obituary, all living children in attendance; yet her possessions from the Cuba Hotel were offered to anyone who would come and take them. Virginia Rowden is the proud owner of Aunt Nell's beautiful dining room set, two gorgeous rockers (that Virginia had the bottoms rewoven in) and a couple kitchen cabinets. The dining room set is in fabulous condition.

OBITUARY --
FUNERAL OF GEORGE WASHINGTON HELD SUNDAY
---------------------
Howell County Descendant of Brother of First President of United States Laid At Rest In Howell Valley Cemetery
---------------------
Funeral services for George Dusenberry Washington, 64 years old, who died suddenly last Wednesday morning, were held yesterday at the family home at Cull, eight miles east of West Plains, and were attended by many relatives and friends of the family.
The service was conducted by the Rev. Joe Rouintree, Methodist minister at Cull, and special musical numbers were given by a choir of eight voices.
Serving as pallbearers were B. R. Holcomb, Steve Heard, Tom Summers, Leslie Ryan and J. W. Thompson, all of Cull, and Arthur Allen of West Plains.
Burial was in Howell Valley cemetery (formerly Langston cemetery).
INTERESTING FAMILY HISTORY
Mr. Washington, who was a direct descendant of Charles Washington, a brother of George Washington, first president of the United States, was a son of Jesse David Washington and Sarah Maria Washington, early pioneer residents of West Plains.
Although he was born in Breckenridge, Mo., June 3, 1867, soon after his family moved to Missouri from Virginia, George Washington had spent the greater part of his life in Howell County.
He was married April 20, 1892 to Katie Mullen, daughter of Patrick Mullen of Crawford county, the marriage having taken place in the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Springfield, Mo.
Shortly after their marriage Mr. and Mrs. Washington moved to Howell county and located on a farm southwest of West Plains where they reared a large family.
Surviving Mr. Washington are his widow and five sons and five daughters who are Mrs. Sarah Dixon Rouintree, of Red Oak, Ia., Miss Cora Rosa Washington of Phoenix, Ariz., Lee Patrick Washington and Edward Hudson Washington of West Plains, Mrs. Katherine K. Robertson of Talmadge, Calif., Robert Dusenberry Washington of Red Oak, Ia., Georgia Marie Washington of Phoenix, Ariz., Wayne Kenneth Washington, who is a member of the U.S. Cavalry of Ft. Riley, Kans., Russell Lowell Washington and Dorothea Louise Washington of the home. Five grandchildren and also one sister and a brother are Miss Zella Washington and Dan Washington of West Plains.
All of the sons and daughters and the surviving brother and sister were present for the funeral.
AUTHENTIC FAMILY RECORD
The death of George Washington, namesake and kinsman of the illustrious "father of his country" recalls the interesting history of the Washington families here.
While Howell county boasts many families who are descendants of famous early pioneer families of America, none lay claim to more distinguished ancestry than does the Washington family here, and also there is no family whose ancestral records are more complete nor more authentic than those of the family of Jesse David Washington, the late father of George Washington of Cull.
The family records are on file in Washington, D. C., and many years ago family heirlooms in possession of the Washingtons here were presented to Congress and accepted as authentic heirlooms of the family of General George Washington.
Although his ancestors all were members of the Church of England and an ancient family Bible in possession of the family here shows that the colonial members of the family were members of the Protestant Episcopal church of Virginia, George Dusenberry Washington of Cull was a devout member of the Methodist Episcopal church, South, having been converted and baptized into the Methodist church when he was 17 years old.
George Dusenberry Washington's father, Jesse David Washington of West Plains, was the great-grandson of Charles Washington, brother of General George Washington, first president of the United States.
Charles Washington who was the fifth son of Augustine Washington, father of General Washington, was married to Mildred Thornton, daughter of Col. Francis Thornton of Spottswood county, Virginia. Charles Washington was a colonel in the American Army and had four children. His second son, Samuel Washington was the great-grandfather of George Dusenberry Washington of Cull.
Samuel Washington was a captain in the American army and lived in Fredericksburg, VA. He married Dorothea Quarrier and their son, Samuel T. Washington, was the grandfather of George Dusenberry Washington. Samuel T. Washington died in Oklahoma in 1860. He had seven sons, Jesse D. Washington of West Plains, father of George D. Washington, of Cull, being his second son.
WIFE NIECE OF JEFF DAVIS
Mrs. Katie Mullen Washington, widow of George Washington of Cull, is herself a descendant of another illustrious family, being a niece of Jeff Davis, president of the Southern Confederacy.
