In his life, he composed 260 pieces, inclusing operas. Wolfgang died at age 35 in Vienna, Austria, of rheumatic fever and heart failure. |
The Barber of Seville The characters in this opera are: Dr. Bartolo, a physician who is the old guardian and uncle of Rosina; Rosina, his beautiful niece; Count Almaviva, a rich Count who is in love with Rosina; Figaro, the smart and scheming Barber of Seville; Basilio, Rosina's music teacher; Fiorello, a servant of the Count; Ambrosius, Dr. Bartolo's servant; and Berta, an old housemaid of Dr. Bartolo. By his strict watch over Rosina, Dr. Bartolo hopes to ward off any potential suitors and eventually win her hand in marriage. His plans begin to go awry one day when Count Almaviva spies Rosina on her balcony and instantly is smitten by her beauty and charm. The Count then decides to pursue her even though her uncle will not let him see Rosina. Count Almaviva disguises his true identity from Rosina-he pretends to be a poor young man named Lindoro so that she will love him for himself, not for his money. To aid him in his pursuit of Rosina, the Count hires Figaro, the infamous barber of Seville. Figaro ingeniously plans several schemes to disguise the Count so that he can gain entrance into Dr. Bartolo's house and exchange letters with Rosina. Meanwhile, Rosina is falling in love with Count Almaviva and has decided to defy her uncle and clandestinely communicate with him. Despite all of Dr. Bartolo's attempts to prevent contact between Rosina and the Count, they are married in secret with help from Figaro. When Dr. Bartolo realizes that the couple has evaded his watchful eye and wed he gives them his blessing. The End
