Back up Lights

One of the ugly areas on the Shay is the one lone backup light. lets see if we can make a difference.

Parts Required: 1. 18-gauge metal - I bought a piece that is 48" x 4" with a 1/2" lip on one side.

2. A junkyard visit netted the backup lights from a 79 El Camino. (Any matched pair that you like will do) they should be flat mounted.I paid $35.00 and got all the wire harness too.

1. Remove the existing backup light; the wire has a butt connector that will unplug.

2. Sand the 18-gauge metal and cut to 31" long; this will allow the drop down extension to fit between the spring shackles.

3. Cut the holes for the new lights to flush mount in; I offset the holes to the top (the side with the 1/2"

4. I made some brackets to hold the light housing in place; this will depend on what type lights you are using.

5. Tape off lights and paint the 18-gauge metal black.

6.Drill bolt holes on the 1/2" lip; I used a total of five.

7.Drill matching holes on the bottom lip of the original backup light mounting bar.

8 Mount the extension to the original; I used ¼ x 20 bolts.

9. Connect the wiring from the new lights to the old backup light wiring; I put new bulbs in just to be safe.

10. Install the backup lens and test.
