Emergency Brake Lever

Time to replace the Shay emergency brake lever. The orignal button would not release and was hard to reach down in the floor to apply brakes. The answer a stock emergency brake lever found one on e-bay for $18.00, new from Snyders around $75.00

1. Remove the existing e-brake assembly. Remove the 5/16 nut that holds the cable, remove the two 5/16 nuts that holds the lever assembly to the floor.

2. Now we must cut the old ebake assembly, by using this bracket the new asembly will bolt back where the orignal was. Remove the rivet from the center of the old assembly. Now to cut the feet from the old assembly. This piece will end up being 1 1/2" X 5"

3. Grind all the rough edges from the cutoff wheel. Now should have the bracket with the orignal feet.

4. Bolt the feet bracket to the orignal Model A ebrake lever. You will need to drill one new mounting hole and use the existing hole on the front end.

5. The feet may need some spacing so the Model A lever moves freely.

6. Will need a 1" spacer for the foot close to the seat. This will insure the lever is setting in the correct position. Bolt the lever back into the orignal location.

7. Cut the tension adjustment assembly from the Pinto ebrake assembly (moving the tension adjustment from inside the car).

8. Will need 1/8"X1"X8 1/2" piece of flat stock, mount tension adjuster on one end drill 5/16 hole this is to attach the flat bar to the ebrake assembly

9. Slide the flat bar into the slot from the orignal, do this from the underside of the car. Attach the flat bar to the lever, insure that you have movement overy the full range. Button up the inside assembly (getting close I promise)

10. The adjusting rod will need to be cut backaround 8", cut the end toward the back of the car, you will need to make a bend in the rod to attach to the bracket that holds the emergency cables, drill a 1/8" hole in the rod for a cotter pin, thread the adjustment nut back on, tighten till you have the right amount of tension on the emergency lever.
