I was doing my spring tune up on the Shay when it occurred to me that now would be a good time to install a new Duraspark Ignition Module. These modules are mounted on the firewall and are subject to lots of heat. Overtime the insulation will melt and run down the firewall making a mess. Even more of a problem is when heated the module will cut off the engine. After it cools the engine will restart. After time it will cut off completely and you will be in for a walk.
Module cost $21.34 (I carried my old one with me, the part number they had was MPI CBE7, be sure to get an exact replacement, look for the blue tab that holds the wire harness.
Another source for the module AutoZone part #F102 price $$22.99
Removal:( Not a lot of room under that dash
1. Under the dash you will find 3 fasteners. They are 1/4x20 and you will need a 7/16 socket and maybe a 7/16 open/box wrench.
2. Remove all 3 bolts, they may have some fiberglass holding them if they are original.
3. Outside the car remove the 2 wiring harness that attach to the module. Remove the old module.
4. Connect the wiring harness to the new module.
5. You will need to have help, one person will need to hold the module in place, and the other will need to be under the dash to align the fastener into the new module.
6. Tighten the fasteners down,
Since my old one was still good I put it in the trunk, Just in Case.
