There are many options when it comes to wheels for the Shay, we will look at each option.

1. Option one is to keep the stock Shay wheels this will require a good set of wheels, I was lucky that I had a very good set of wheels

A fresh paint job, clean and polish the center cap, new lug nuts (Sometimes referred to as a dome type. 1/2x20 thread size acorn style chrome 13/16hex1.4 long You can order on line from http://www.ezaccessory.com/Acorn_Lug_Nuts_s/1.htm ) and stem covers.

2. Option two a set of late model or custom wheels. Notice that these wheels still retain the four lug pattern, watch the offset of the wheels, you may need wheel spacers to insure the wheel does not rub the disc brake on the front.

This set of custom wheels was 100.00 for all four.

Option three convert the four lug to five lug via adapters. These adapters are two piece affairs. This set came from an E-bay site and was around 100.00. They convert to the Ford 4.5 5 lug pattern. They will also act as a spacer which will offset the wheels out.

You will have to remove the tip of the existing four lugs as they will be long for the adapter.

The inner piece bolts to the four lug using lug nuts.

Note the outer piece bolts on with large counter sunk lug nuts, you want to use locktite on these. Now you end with a five lug conversion.

Option Four replace front 4 lug rotors with 5 lug rotors. The 5 lug rotor from www.abettershay.com is the same rotor size as the pinto/mustang 4 lug. The bearings are the same is a very quick way to get the 5 lug.

Now as to rear end you have a couple more option.

1. If you are satisfied with the stock rear end you can remove the rear axles and have a machine shop bore them for five lug.

Use a brake hub from a 5 lug rear end (ford ranger works well.)

2. If you need different gearing or just want different rear end the ford ranger rear end is an excellent choice requires a bit more work.

I like the 5 lug front rotors with the bore of the rear axles. With this set up I was able to use a set of 6 x 15 wire spoke wheels (Dodge or Thunderbird). It gave me a better ride and looks like an original wheel.
