Andy’s Reunion report
In case you haven't had a report, just a note to tell you the reunion last weekend was a great event. We met up for lunch in the bar of the Victoria Hotel on Sat., strolled round Bradford in the afternoon, taking in sites such as Rawson Market (Phil, I had hoped to buy a cheap slab of gristle as a souvenir, but alas the place was a ruin - more so than when it was open - there are plans for a "Rawson Quarter" keeping the old façades), University and Bradford Halls, the Peel, the main building (little changed), the Alhambra (bright and newly restored), nos. 6, 19 and, of course, 10 Ashgrove (looked even worse than when we inhabited it except that the sash windows had been replaced and there was a new front door in front of which Rod and I posed for a historic photo) and Milo's (now taken over by Pakistanis and appropriately renamed).
We went to the Union Bar at 7 p.m. This was in the same place but somewhat posher and the beer offering has improved immensely, with several real ales, as compared to our day when we were forced to drink bottles of Newkie Brown to avoid the dreadful Websters. By closing time, I knew that drinking 4 pints on an empty stomach was something I hadn't done for some time.
We then went to the Kash, which is now huge and on three levels. The steps down the side to the cellar are now covered and palatial with no sign of dustbins and inside it was (comparatively) posh. The prices have gone up a bit and, not surprisingly, chapatis are no longer free, but at 20p each by far the cheapest I have enjoyed for many a day. The recipe for the sauce with the raw onion and tomato was unchanged and my keema madras could have been made 30 years ago (?). Astonishingly, a spoon was provided for the refined; Rod accused me of using it but I swear I was just moving it out of the way of my chapati. A final pint in the bar of the Hilton (ex-Norfolk Gardens) finished the evening (and me) off. The next morning I enjoyed sensations seldom experienced over the last 28 years.
It was great seeing everyone there. Present were Graham, Rod, Helen, Ros, Pam, Verity, Sheila, Jan (Vickers), Sue Allott, Penny Rossiter, Heather Wilson, Mary Dennett, Margaret Knowlson, Jo Magne, Diana Norris, Ingrid Rock, Jennifer Peace and Kath Stobert. Derek's car broke down on the way to the airport in France so he didn't make it. Unfortunately, no contact was made with Paul or Ray. Steve is in Canada and Kev in Spain - they couldn't make it. Arthur Williams joined us for a couple of hours in the Union Bar. At home in Munich on Sunday night it was difficult to believe it had actually happened - transported back 28 years for a day then back to current reality again. If Pam hasn't told you about it, I recommend the Reunion web site on www.angelfire.com/moon/bradfordreunion where you can spend a fascinating hour on the photos (including many of the reunion itself) and biographies. She's done a fantastic job on it.
