Cool Things

One really cool thing that's happened here since I got here was that I was invited to see a Japanese pre-wedding. I couldn't actually go to the actually ceremony because it was a Shinto wedding and it's set up almost like a dinner with set places for people. It costs about 30,000 yen ($355 cnd) to attend one. Only family attends the wedding ceremony. Friends all sit outside and wait for the ceremony to be done. I was fortunate enough to meet the bride (one of my co-worker's sister) and try on her Kimono.

Me trying on the beautifully embroidered kimono - it was SO heavy!

Another really cool thing I did the other day was that I made soba. Aaron invited me to his school and we were taught how to make soba from scratch. I do think it is way easier to go to the store and buy the soba. Basically, it's like making dough - we start off with some kind of flour. We then mix in water and knead the dough. Then we roll the dough till it's really thin, then we either put it through the pasta cutter or hand cut it. Simple, but lots of work! We had so many of the ladies in the PTA help us. It was great. We cooked and ate our creation too!

Thumbs up! We're ready to go! That's all the stuff we started with. Here I am mixing the water & flour to make the soba (dough).

After kneading the soba dough, we start to roll the dough flat. After we flatten the soba dough, we fold it up and start cutting the soba.

All cut up now! We opted to hand cut it, rather than use the machine. There's Aaron poised & ready to cook!
