History: When Hotaru was little, and playing in Professor Souichi Tomoe (her father)'s laboratory, there was an explosion that killed her (and her mother?). Pharaoh-90 was there, and told Professor Tomoe that he would revive his daughter if Tomoe agreed to give his soul to Pharaoh-90. Tomoe, loving his daughter more than anything, agreed. Hotaru was revived, but was very frail and weak ever since, and sometimes they show her with wires all over her like she's a machine. Since the explosion, Pharaoh-90 took control of them, and used them for his plan to silence the world. Professor Tomoe created Daimons, and had his assistant Kaolinite and the Witches 5 find pure hearts to feed the Silent Messiah (Hotaru) so she could grow more powerful and turn into Mistress-9.

Hotaru first appears in the S series, which revolves around her. She lives with her father (a doctor and principal of Maguen Gakuen Academy) and his assistant Kaori (evil name = Kaolinite) in a big mansion. Hotaru is kind, but outcasted and withdrawn because of her strange power to heal and blast people (without turning into Sailor Saturn). Her only friend is Chibi-Usa, who Hotaru healed when she got a scrape on her arm. Chibi-Usa didn't think her power was "icky" like all of Hotaru's classmates did, so they became friends. Hotaru is very pale and tires easily; she often has seizures. Seemingly without her conscious knowledge, she becomes the Silent Messiah, who sits in a throne in her father's secret basement telling him to collect pure hearts and find the three talisman to make the Holy Grail, which has the power to destroy the world. As Silent Messiah, she is calm and unsympathetic. She, her father, Kaolinite, and the Witches 5 are in a group called the Death Busters. Their goal is to bring Master Pharaoh-90 to this world and leave the world in a nuclear winter state known as "The Silence." When Silent Messiah eats pure hearts, she gets stronger. Eating Chibi-Usa's pure heart, Silent Messiah turned into Mistress-9, who is an evil adult woman with long black hair that she uses to strangle people. At that point, Professor Tomoe wasn't evil anymore and turned back into his normal self. Inside Mistress-9, Hotaru fought to gain control of her body. When she finally did, she turned into Sailor Saturn, the second strongest Senshi (first strongest is Sailor Moon). She returned Chibi-Usa's heart crystal and went to destroy Pharaoh-90. Sailor Moon wanted to help, even though she couldn't transform without the Holy Grail, but Saturn didn't want her to interfere. Sailor Moon did anyway, after all the Senshi lended her their powers. They destroyed Pharaoh-90 together, and Hotaru returned to baby-state. Setsuna took her from her father, and Haruka and Michiru raised her out of town. They don't appear at all in the Super S series. In the Stars series though, they return, and child-Hotaru grows to her original age in just a couple of days and awakens as Sailor Saturn again to help the Senshi fight against the new evil.
