Route 666 Exit sign the day after the state renamed the highway.  Colorado & New Mexico residents including the Navajo Nation petitioned their local governments to change the name of the road, essentially believing the road is cursed or evil based on a high number of accidents taking place there through the years.

Others seem to agree that it is the address of the Beast and that the Anti-Christ lives somewhere along the road.  Rev. Matthew Patterson states the he believes that renaming the highway will result in the Anti-Christ "being on the prowel" and that "evil can be contained, but only if we know where it is." The road is now officially US Hwy 491.
