- First name was Short Horse, because of the short races they ran (1/4 a mile)
- There are more than 2,000,000 horses registered in the American Quarter Horse Association today, which was established in 1940, and is the largest of any breed registries
- Very useful for herding cattle when settling the West
- English started racing Q.H. anywhere they could, but Thouroughbreds were also used for racing, so Q.H. racing isn't as popular now as it was back a while
- Now they are mainly used for ranch work, pleasure riding, and rodeo events
- Oldest surviving American horse breed
- Begun by breeding Mustangs from Arab, Barb, and Turk origin with Thouroughbreds.
