Appeals court rules against singer's former wife
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Main News

Wednesday, February 15, 2006; Posted: 9:31 p.m. EST (02:31 GMT)

LOS ANGELES, California (Reuters) -- An appeals court Wednesday reinstated an order granting Michael Jackson sole custody of his two children with ex-wife Debbie Rowe...

California's 2nd District Court of Appeals ruled that Rowe, who in 2001 signed away her parental rights to the 47-year-old performer's two oldest children, Michael Jr. and Paris, had no legal grounds to terminate that arrangement.

Rowe, who was married to Jackson from 1997 to 1999 but never lived with the self-styled King of Pop, persuaded a Los Angeles Superior Court judge to overturn the child custody agreement in 2004 on legal grounds.

After the lower court refused Jackson's request to overturn that order, he appealed to the 2nd District, which ruled in favor of the entertainer and held that the original order terminating Rowe's parental rights should stand.

MICHAEL JACKSON NOT IN DISCUSSIONS REGARDING POPE JOHN PAUL II'S PRAYERS
Mood:  happy
Topic: Main News

Washington, D.C. ….. Contrary to published reports in Italy, and the United States, Michael Jackson has not participated in any discussions with the Vatican, or Edizioni Musicali Terzo Millennio, an Italian music label specializing in religious songs, to record music to Pope John Paul II's prayers.

None of Mr. Jackson's authorized representatives have contacted either the Vatican, or Edizioni Musicali Terzo Millennio, regarding this proposed project.

Michael Jackson is unaware of this project, and news reports stating otherwise are completely erroneous.

Italian Priest Wants Jackson on CD
Mood:  surprised
Topic: Main News
Feb 6, 4:17 PM EST
The Associated Press

An Italian priest who runs a music label specializing in religious songs said on Monday that Michael Jackson could be one of several artists to sing on a CD of Pope John Paul II's prayers, but cautioned that the project is "only a small idea" that has yet to be run by the Vatican for approval.

The label Edizioni Musicali Terzo Millennio has in past years produced CDs of famous actors reciting poems composed by the late pontiff. Now, the Rev. Giuseppe Moscati said he is considering producing a CD in which singers perform songs with lyrics drawn from 24 prayers penned by John Paul.

"It is only a hope, an idea," Moscati said in a telephone interview. He stressed that the recording label would have to buy the rights from the Vatican.

"We still have to propose this to the Vatican," Moscati said. He added that any production would have to show "respect for the greatness of John Paul."

The priest said music industry contacts of his had inquired about Jackson's participation, but said, "we haven't met him or heard from him."

Jackson spokeswoman Raymone K. Bain said that "about a year ago, (Jackson) was contacted by the Vatican to work on some music. Because he was in trial at the time, he was not able to focus on it."

The pop star was acquitted in June of child molestation charges in California after a five-month trial.

Bain added: "I am not aware there has been any recent inquiry."

Vatican officials said they were unaware of any contacts with Jackson.

Moscati declined to name other artists who might contribute to the album.

Jackson Ordered To Pay Rowe's Legal Fees!!
Mood:  irritated
Topic: Main News
Lawyers for Michael Jackson's ex-wife, Debbie Rowe, say he is $75,000 behind in paying her legal fees for their ongoing custody battle.

Jackson and Rowe have been battling in Los Angeles family court for custody of Prince Michael, 8, and Paris, 7, who currently live with their father and his third son by another mother in Bahrain.

The court had ordered Jackson to pay Rowe's legal team, which the New York Daily Post said is common when one parent has a lot more money than the other.

Court documents obtained by the Post say Jackson has fallen behind in his payments and Rowe's attorneys are seeking access to his financial records, the Post said.

Neither side could be reached for comment on the report.

The next hearing the custody fight is scheduled for March 17.

MichaelGate: The Conspiracy - Author Geraldine Hughes needs your support
Mood:  bright
Topic: Open Letters
Hello Positive Voices:

I continue to marvel at the power of Michael Jackson's fan clubs and fans. I seek your assistance once again in getting my next book "MichealGate: The Conspiracy" picked up by a major publisher which would eliminate the problems that we had with Redemption being published by a small publisher.

My agent is pitching MichaelGate to several major publishers and she feels that if we give them a sign of support from Michael's fans, this will move their hands in penning the deal. We are now looking at the book being released in February 2006 and, as most of you already know, it is about all the conspiracies that were responsible for the 2005 Michael Jackson trial. It is being called MichaelGate because I am skillfully showing the resemblances between Watergate and what happened to Michael Jackson (government abuse of power).

If you are in support of me getting this book published and out, this time by a major publisher, can you please send me a SHORT email stating why you think this book should be published and how you intend to support it: Please send email to: ghughes002@yahoo.com titled "MichaelGate".

Thank you, once again, and with your help, my next book, which too will reveal the truth about the 2005 conspiracies, will not only be published, but will be promoted worldwide.

Geraldine Hughes

Jackson dons black robe, veil in Bahrain mall

Pop singer accompanied by three veiled children during shopping trip
The Associated Press
Updated: 10:42 a.m. ET Jan. 25, 2006

MANAMA, Bahrain - Michael Jackson visited a mall in Bahrain's capital Wednesday, covering himself in a black abaya robe traditionally worn by conservative Bahraini women and a veil hiding his face.

The 47-year-old pop star was accompanied by three children, apparently his, whose faces were covered with dark scarves. They wore yellow shirts and sweat pants or khakis, without robes.

Jackson, who seems to be settling in the Persian Gulf, was seen leaving Marina Mall holding a young child by the hand. On the way out through a back door, he shook hands with security guards.

He was wearing an abaya, a robe with long sleeves, under which his pants, white shirt and men's shoes could be seen. His head and face were wrapped in a black veil and he was wearing black gloves.

The veil, abaya and gloves were of a style typically worn by conservative Bahraini women, though Jackson appeared to be wearing them to hide his identity.
A woman wearing an abaya, jeans and a scarf over her head that partially covered her face accompanied Jackson. She asked photographers to respect their privacy, saying they were scaring the children.

Since his June acquittal in California on child molestation charges, Jackson has made several trips to Bahrain as a guest of Sheik Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the son of Bahrain's king.

In November, Jackson stirred a small controversy in the United Arab Emirates by entering the ladies room in a shopping mall. His publicist, Raymone K. Bain, said Jackson didn't understand the Arabic sign on the door and left the bathroom when he realized his mistake.

Walk with the animals, talk with the judge: a real life Dr. Doolittle

William Etling
January 23, 2006 12:00 AM

You heard it here first.

"I've not talked to anybody else in the media at all," said veterinarian Dr. Martin Dinnes, the real life Dr. Doolittle who manages Michael Jackson's menagerie at the sprawling 2,676-acre Neverland Valley Ranch. "The animals are fine. Our dispute is all settled."

"Through all of this, all the principals, and Neverland, and MJJ, and all of Michael's entities knew that even if I didn't get paid," he added, "I was going to take care of those animals."

Dr. Dinnes, who for 20 years has helped Jackson assemble and maintain his exotic zoo, was just the latest in a long line of creditors to trundle a wheelbarrow full of unpaid bills to the county courthouse when he dunned the expatriate prince of pop for $91,602.05 on Dec. 27.

Contractors, antique dealers, jewelers, vendors, ex-wives, promoters, managers, bankers, and employees have discovered to their discomfort that Michael Jackson is a slow pay.

Last week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said it had investigated a complaint from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that animals at Neverland were being mistreated. Agency veterinarians visited and found the animals in good condition.

"Attacking the health and welfare of those animals is a direct attack on me, and my credentials are impeccable," said Dr. Dinnes. "We really have nothing to hide. Our doors are open, to the right people. You could eat off the ground on that property."

As is his wont, Jackson went first class in assembling his menagerie.

The animals have architecturally-designed, custom-built homes. Dr. Dinnes has a sterling reputation among his peers. A colleague of his told me, "Marty is great. The best."

UC Davis awarded Dr. Dinnes, a 1966 alumnus, it’s highest honor in 2000.

"Martin R. Dinnes, a diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine and first veterinarian to completely devote a practice to non-domestic animals, received the 2000 Alumni Achievement Award for his accomplishments in the profession of veterinary medicine, specifically in creating novel protocols benefiting the health and well-being of zoological animals," according to UC Davis.

"Michael and I are very close," Dr. Dinnes said. "We've been close for 20 years. My dispute was not with Michael. It was with his business people. Through everything that Michael went through, their mind wasn't on a lot of things. I've been there with him before, through times when I failed to get a check on time, but they never, ever stuck me, and I was assured they never would again. Something triggered me to file, but it's all settled."

"I'm not paid, pending a signature, but suffice it to say, it's settled," said Dr. Dinnes. "We got a clean bill of health from the USDA, and I have that in writing. I talked to Pete Miller at Santa Barbara County Animal Services. He's an investigator. I have a long history with them. Pete said, 'Marty, I believe whatever you say. I just had to call you because we hear what we consider rumors.' "

"Contrary to what people are saying in all these looney-toon reports, the animals are fine," said Dr. Dinnes. "I go up there once a week. The animals are well-fed. They're in good condition. It's just not like what's reported.

"My attorney asked the Enquirer, 'Where'd you get the information?' They said, PETA. 'Where'd you get the pictures that you took?' They said, 'From a helicopter.'

"You know how you can doctor pictures; I'm just surmising. They did take a picture of the elephants being walked, and they conveniently had a clump of elephant poop around them. They took a picture of the giraffes in the yard, and claimed that there was a dark spot on the ground that they said was blood. Under my watch, that can never happen," said Dr. Dinnes.

PETA had waded into the fray with some heavy-duty scolding, but admit they don't have any privileged info.

"We have heard pretty much the same thing everyone else has: the accusations in the media from employees and former employees that the animals have essentially been abandoned, and that Michael Jackson's veterinarian is now apparently suing him for not paying his vet bill," said PETA spokesperson Lisa Wathne. "We don't have any inside scoop, unfortunately. Because Neverland is not open to the public, it's a very difficult place to get any information about."

Ms Baine's Convo With Geraldo...In Case You Missed It

Joining me now to sort fact from fiction is Michael Jackson's spokesperson, my friend, Raymone K. Bain.

G: Hi Raymone!

RB: Hi Geraldo (she was wearing a black suit with white piping and a three string pearl necklace)

G: First of all Raymone, you know the rumor that swept the world that he is on prescription drugs, on Demoral, that he is abusing these drugs and he's very, very ill ---

RB: Hmm -- Not true. I've seen him, I've spent time with him, we've been on the phone and there's so many other people who have been speaking to him recently -- there's so many people who have spoken to Michael in the last several months, that can verify the fact that he is not drowning in drugs. It is unbelievable how some of these
reports are dissiminated.

G: But how often do you speak with him?

RB: I have been speaking to him quite a lot because as I've said, he has been 'hands-on' with regards to work--

G: So when was the last time you spoke to him?

RB: Yesterday.

G: Just yesterday.

RB: Yes. um hmm.

G: Okay so he is focused and you think that he is physically in good shape.

RB: Well I know he's physically in good shape -- I've seen him, I've been in his presence, my team has been in his presence, the artists have been speaking to him constantly back and forth about this project that we're hoping will help tremendously down in the southern --

G: 'I Have This Dream' -- now when is this song being released?

RB: We are looking at releasing it mid-month -- in February -- mid to late February.

G: And will the proceeds will be going to Katrina relief?

RB: Yes.

G: Was he looking for –

RB: Absolutely not --

G: -- begging for a job in Bahrain?

RB: Absolutely NOT! I was astounished in looking at some major reputable news organizations where the headlines were: 'Michael Jackson looks for a job'! The truth is that a multi-billion dollar entertainment conglomerate has asked him if he would consider becoming an advisor helping to bring entertainment enterprises to the Middle East.

Don't believe 90% of what you read because 9 times out of 10, it isn't true. And this record is happening, we have some absolutely fabulous artists who are participating and we are hoping that it will help tremendously down in the Gulf region of this country.

The End.

The Fan!

A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare collections of art, including Michael Jackson. They had everything in their collection, from Motown to the very latest Essential, to other valuable collections of art such as the Van Goghs, the Rembrandts. They would often sit together and admire the great talent of Michael Jackson while admiring the famous art that decorated the estate.

When the allegations broke out, the son was sent off to Iraq. He was very courageous and died in combat while rescuing another soldier. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son.

Just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in
his hands.

He said, "Sir, you don't know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives
that day, and he was carrying me to safety when a bullet struck him in the heart and he died instantly. He often talked about you, and your great admiration for Michael Jackson and his great talent." The young man held out this package. "I know this isn't much. I'm not really a great artist, but I think your son would have wanted you to have this."

The father opened the package. It was a portrait of his son, and himself posing with Michael Jackson, painted by the young man. He stared in awe at the way the soldier had captured the personality of his son's great admiration for Michael in the painting. The father was so drawn to the painting that his own eyes welled up with tears. He thanked the young man and offered to pay him for the picture. "Oh, no sir, I could never repay what your son did for me. It's a gift. I call it 'The Fan'."

The father hung the portrait over his mantle. Every time visitors came to his home he took them to see the portrait of The Fan before he showed them any of the other great works he had collected.

The old man died a few months later. There was to be a great auction of him and his son's collection. Many influential people gathered in hopes to own a famous painting.

On the platform sat the painting of The Fan. The auctioneer pounded his gavel. "We will start the bidding with this picture of The Fan. Who will bid for this picture?"

There was silence.

Then a voice in the back of the room shouted, "We want to see the famous paintings. Skip this one."

But the auctioneer persisted. "Will somebody bid for this painting. Who will start the bidding? $100, $200?"

Another voice angrily. "We didn't come to see this painting. We came to see the Van Goghs, the Rembrandts. Get on with the real bids!"

But still the auctioneer continued. "The Fan! The Fan! Who'll take The Fan?"

Finally, a voice came from the very back of the room. It was the longtime gardener of the man and his son. "I'll give $10 for the painting." Being a poor man, it was all he could afford.

"We have $10, who will bid $20?"

"Give it to him for $10. Let's see the masters.""$10 is the bid, won't someone bid $20?"

The crowd was becoming angry. They didn't want the picture of The Fan.

They wanted the more worthy investments for their collections.

The auctioneer pounded the gavel. "Going once, twice, SOLD for $10!"A man sitting on the second row shouted, "Now let's get on with the collection!"

The auctioneer laid down his gavel. "I'm sorry, the auction is over."

"What about the paintings?"

"I am sorry. When I was called to conduct this auction, I was told of a secret stipulation in the will. I was not allowed to reveal that stipulation until this time. Only the painting of The Fan would be auctioned. Whoever bought that painting would inherit the entire estate, including the paintings.

The person who took The Fan gets everything!"

Never underestimate a Michael Jackson fan.

Feds: Jackson's Animals Not Mistreated
Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Main News
Wed Jan 18, 10:21 AM ET

The giraffes and other exotic animals Michael Jackson has kept at his Neverland Ranch are not being mistreated, federal officials have concluded.

The Department of Agriculture sent an inspector to the 2,600-acre ranch in Central California last month in response to a complaint from People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals. PETA based its complaint on European tabloid reports that animals were being kept in substandard conditions.

"I'm unaware of any violations of the Animal Welfare Act at Neverland," Darby Holladay, a spokesman with the USDA in Washington, said Tuesday.

Along with giraffes, Jackson's ranch has been home to elephants, snakes, orangutans, tigers and a crocodile.
Jackson, 47, has been living in the Persian Gulf nation of Bahrain since shortly after being acquitted of child molestation charges last year.

Brian Oxman, a lawyer for the pop star, welcomed the USDA's determination. "That's very nice and we appreciate it," he said.

Lisa Wathne, PETA's specialist on captive exotic animals, said the group plans to file a similar complaint with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service because African elephants and orangutans are protected under the federal Endangered Species Act.

Company claims singer may sign on as an entertainment consultant
The Associated Press
Updated: 12:31 p.m. ET Jan. 17, 2006

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates - Michael Jackson seems to be settling in to the Persian Gulf. The pop star has shopped for real estate here, been spotted in glitzy malls — and now appears to be interviewing for a job.

Jackson, who was acquitted on child molestation charges in California last year, is negotiating a position as a consultant with a Bahrain-based company that plans to set up theme parks and music academies in the Middle East, according to a press release.
AAJ Holdings Ltd., owned by Ahmed Abu Bakr Janahi, said it wants to hire 47-year-old Jackson to give advice on setting up entertainment businesses.

Jackson’s publicist, Raymone K. Bain, couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.
AAJ, which focuses mainly on urban development projects, played a key role in designing Bahrain’s ongoing Financial Harbor development and Oman’s Blue City, a multibillion-dollar tourist resort with golf courses, hotels and several dozen miles of sandy beaches.

“Stagnant architectural structures need content in the form of entertainment to revive them and that’s where Michael Jackson will play an integral role,” the statement said.

Jackson is reportedly building a home in Bahrain, an island nation in the Persian Gulf linked to Saudi Arabia by a bridge.

In his last known visit to Dubai in November, he was seen checking out some of the world’s priciest real estate developments. His host at the time, Emirates champion rally driver Mohammed bin Sulayem, said Jackson was considering buying property here.

News reports out of Manama, the Bahraini capital, have quoted Jackson’s publicist as saying the pop star is in the process of finalizing his Hurricane Katrina relief song, which will be released on 2 Seas Records.

Keisha Cole, Ciara, Snoop Dogg, Babyface and R. Kelly are among those taking part in the song, “I Have This Dream,” reports said.

The record label belongs to Sheik Abdullah bin Hamad Al Khalifa, a regional governor and the Bahraini king’s son, who is reportedly spearheading the project.

PETA snaps at Jackson?s treatment of animals

Michael Jackson may have been cleared on those child molestation charges — but now he’s facing allegations of animal cruelty.

The “Thriller” singer has come under attack by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, which is saying that self-proclaimed animal lover Jackson — who lately has been living in Bahrain — has left the animals at his Neverland Ranch in California in a state of “squalor.” The group has asked the U.S. Department of Agriculture to investigate.

“Photos [of Neverland] make it clear that the animals are being held in what can only be described as cruel conditions,” Lisa Wathne, spokeswoman for PETA, told the London Mirror. “They’re abysmal, little more than holding cells. Jackson must close this place and relocate the animals to an accredited zoo or sanctuary.”

A spokesman for Jackson declined to comment.

Another Ridiculous Accusation Against Jackson
Mood:  irritated
Topic: Main News
by Aaron Barrow
MJ News Source

Jan 14, 2006 The King Of Pop, Michael Jackson, has been accused of sexual molestation once again. Before you pass judgment, commentator Pearl Jr. and I dug up the truth behind this matter.

In March of 2004, the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) launched a criminal investigation after, then, 18-year-old Daniel Kapone made allegations of sexual abuse. After a two-month investigation, the LAPD cleared Jackson of all accusations, finding the accuser and allegations not credible.

It has been reported that in November of 2004, victim's rights attorney, Gloria Allred, represented Kapone. Then months later when Allred discovered that Kapone had never met the pop star, Allred quickly dropped Kapone as her client.

The next month after Jackson was acquitted and found “Not Guilty” on all counts in his 2005 child molestation trial, on July 25, Kapone filed a handwritten, paper-thin, lawsuit with little or no details. At that time, Kapone had no legal representation. Then, in October 2005, Kapone re- submitted his lawsuit, this time with an official document and an attorney. In the lawsuit obtained by www.mjnewssource.com, Kapone filed suit against Jackson, his company MJJ Productions, and SONY Music Corp. Also, the suit listed 1-200 defendants. Kapone’s attorney, Matthew Mattern listed 20 charges stemming from child molestation, plagiarism, and violation of certain civil rights.

Kapone claims that from 1987, when he was two, until December 1999, Jackson sexually molested him, stole his music, and forced him into having cosmetic surgery. The suit claims that Jackson stole songs for the 1987 album "Bad." From the time-line supplied, Kapone would have to be 6 months old, writing songs for the album with the most number-one hits in music history. Kapone also says that Jackson stole songs and released them on the albums "Dangerous," "HIStory: Past, Present, and Future," and "Blood on The Dancefloor." Furthermore, Kapone claims that Jackson gave him drugs and alcohol plus called him Jewish epithets.

Even though Kapone wanted to testify as an “1108” witness in Jackson's 2005 trial, he did not because when he was interviewed by Santa Barbara County District Attorney, Tom Sneddon and Deputy- District Attorney, Ron Zonen, BOTH decided NOT to have Kapone as a witness because his allegations were simply too unbelievable.

To date, Michael Jackson’s archenemies Tom Sneddon, Ron Zonen, and Gloria Allred have all passed on this witness due to these outrageously far- fetched claims. With this in mind, who is attorney Matthew Mattern--some type of thrilled seeking, self- serving, ambulance chasing, money hungry lawyer trying to grab his 15 minutes of fame by taking on a case that Michael’s worst enemies won’t even touch.

Lastly, Kapone sold his story for an undisclosed amount to a Brithish tabloid. It was published on May 29, 2004. Kapone also is a part of the high school gang "Messed Up Friends Club" and he was named "head lyncher." Kapone told the tabloid that he was being molested from the age of three [1988] until nine [1994]. But in the lawsuit he says that he was being molested from the age of two [1987] until fourteen [1999]. Making the ridiculous even more ludicrous!

A court hearing is scheduled for February 14, 2006 in Orange County Superior Court. From the evidence that MJNS has seen, it is clearly evident that these charges are, like always, absolutely ridiculous.

MJNS called Jackson's spokeswoman, Raymone Bain and was told that these allegations are 1000% false, fabricated, and made up. We also called Jackson's personal attorney, Brian Oxman, and was told these allegations are “absolutely ridiculous and this is one of the prices you have to pay for being Michael Jackson...it’s a very sad price to pay.” Thomas A. Mesereau, Jr., who successfully defended Jackson at his 2005 trial was reported as saying that “these allegations are ridiculous on their face and that they will be vigorously defended."

Mood:  celebratory
Topic: Main News
FINISHING touches are now being put to the final production of Michael Jackson's Hurricane Katrina relief song - which is being released on Bahraini label 2 Seas Records, according to a statement released by his publicist Raymone Bain yesterday.

The label belongs to Southern Governor Shaikh Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, who is reportedly spearheading the project.

Recording artists Keisha Cole, Ciara, Snoop Dogg, Babyface and R Kelly are among singer taking part in the song, I Have This Dream.

It was written by Mr Jackson in response to Hurricane Katrina, which happened at the end of last August and was the most destructive and costliest natural disaster in the history of the US.

"This project is in response to the widespread devastation wrought by Hurricane Katrina," said Shaikh Abdulla in the statement.

"It is my hope that the proceeds from this recording will make a tremendous difference to all individuals affected by this tragedy in the US."

He also said more than 10 additional artistes participating in the production would be named.

Most of the participants recorded their parts in Los Angeles, while Mr Jackson himself recorded in London.

No release date for the song has been announced, but a spokesman said it is due out "very soon".

Jackson may help local entertainment project
Mood:  happy
Topic: Breaking News
MANAMA: Pop superstar Michael Jackson is holding talks with a Bahrain-based company over a string of possible entertainment projects in the Gulf, from theme parks to music academies.

The star and AAJ Holdings are discussing ways of working together, it was announced yesterday.

Mr Jackson may provide the company and its subsidiaries with consultancy advice to help bolster the music and entertainment sector in the Gulf.

"Stagnant" properties could be revived through entertainment projects, says AAJ Holdings owner and founder Ahmed Abubaker Janahi.

His group has interests in companies around the world and concentrates on projects involving city and urban developments.

AAJ Holdings was instrumental in the creation of the Bahrain Financial Harbour in Bahrain and the Blue City in Oman.

Officials would not comment further yesterday.

Michael Jackson stages turnaround
Mood:  happy

by Richard Morgan Posted 04:44 EST, 6, Jan 2006

Michael Jackson's professional behavior has taken such a bizarre turn toward the rational that the erstwhile King of Pop could have his financial house in order as early as next month.

The House that "Thriller" built and that Jackson has since nearly demolished is still a messy place. But thanks to a short-term extension on $200 million of debt collateralized by his stake in the so-called Beatles song catalog a?” not to mention new representation intent on resolving outstanding legal and financial matters a?” sources familiar with Jackson's finances are more optimistic than they've been in months about averting bankruptcy.

Moreover, the singer appears sufficiently recovered from his June acquittal of child molestation charges to have retained advisers who have more going for them than, as has previously been charged, "having Michael's ear." New legal representation from Jackson's post-trial base in Bahrain has even been complimented by a critical U.S. observer for providing "good advice."

Much of that advice concerns Sony/ATV Music Publishing, a music-publishing joint venture between Jackson and Sony Corp. While it's informally known as the Beatles catalog, the copyrights Sony/ATV either owns or administers extend far beyond the Fab Four to include songs by Leonard Cohen, Miles Davis, Neil Diamond, Bob Dylan, the Everly Brothers, Jimi Hendrix and many others.

Borrowing against his stake in Sony/ATV a?” a half-share that court testimony has valued in excess of $500 million a?” Jackson reportedly owed Bank of America Corp. more than $250 million by 2000. According to court documents, however, BofA dissociated itself from Jackson last May by selling $272.5 million of the singer's debt to New York private equity firm Fortress Investment Group LLC.

Of the amount taken on by Fortress, $200 million was said to have been collateralized by Sony/ATV. Jackson's solely owned catalog, MiJac Music Publishing Co., and a lien on his Neverland ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley secured the remainder.

On Dec. 20, Jackson's Sony/ATV-backed loan came due. The deadline gave way to the short-term extension, ultimately, after erroneous speculation Fortress would use a Jackson default to force the singer to sell his Sony/ATV stake to Sony.

In exchange for the extension, Fortress is receiving extension fees and a default interest rate. But the "buying of time," a source said, will prove well worth it.

"They're putting together a long-term plan," he explained, "for paying down some debt and coming up with a lifestyle the guy can actually afford." Another source close to the case added, "Michael's now aware it would be financial suicide for him to lose the catalog by not getting a deal done."

On a parallel track, but to the same end, Jackson has also obtained new representation in an action against him by Prescient Acquisition Group Inc. That suit, filed July 11, seeks $48 million for advisory services allegedly undertaken on behalf of Jackson not only to pay off his bank debt but to buy out Sony from their mutually owned catalog.

After being retained in November 2004, the suit charges, "Prescient in fact secured a commitment for a total of $537.5 million in financing to enable Mr. Jackson to pay off the Bank of America debt and exercise his 'put option' to purchase the 50% interest in the entity known as Sony/ATV that he does not currently own." For its efforts, the suit continues, Prescient has a documented right to a fee of 9% of "the principal amount funded or committed."

Sources close to Sony insisted there's no way it's selling its half of Sony/ATV. However, according to the Prescient suit, a trust set up by Jackson has "an option to purchase the remaining 50% interest in that Beatles library from its partner, Sony/ATV, for $200 million."

The suit has been repeatedly delayed in court, most recently by Latham & Watkins LLP's withdrawing in November as counsel for Jackson. But it promises to begin anew now that William B. Wachtel of Wachtel & Masyr LLP has started representing the defendant.

One source noted that Wachtel and lead Prescient attorney Steven Altman are familiar with the case's legal terrain, having both worked on "Bowie bonds" back in the 1990s. "They know this stuff isn't brain surgery," he said, "so I'm guessing they'll be able to work together and get a deal done."
