Hip Hop Fashions of the 80s

Welcome to the 1980's Fashion In Text Section! Here you can read about what Hip Hop styles were created in the 1980's and still going strong now......

The culture of rap music has had an impact on urban fashion. The styles of rap/hip-hop artists have created multi-billion dollar advertisements and new fashion labels, creating clothing that is both appealing to the eye and affordable for consumers. Designers such as Karl Kani, Tommy Hillfiger, Lugz, and Fubu (to name a few) have developed various clothig lines of urban wear. Examples of hip-hop fashion vary from baggy jeans, oversized shirts, big belt buckles, ski caps, and industrial boots. The stellar advertisement of hip-hop fashion has been used in magazines as well as within the music video scene. Various artists such as Puff Daddy, LL Cool J, Jay-Z, and Will Smith promote hip-hop fashions in their music videos. In the early 1980's, a popular style of hip-hop fashion were sweat suits, head bands, and tennis shoes. Many people all over the US contributed to the break dancing scene. Athletic fashion labels such as Nike and Adidas were popular during this time, due to their durable designs. During the early 1980's the singing group Run DMC introduced their original style of wearing Adidas tennis shoes without the laces, having the tongues sticking out, thus creating a fad that millions of teenagers followed.

Just as teenagers were the main consumers of rap fashion in the 1980's, they still remain to be in the 1990's. Studies show that the majority of consumers of hip-hop fashion are teenagers. Despite the typical "baggy" fashions of hip-hop; lines such as Stussy and Tommy Hillfiger have create a softer line for women. These designs are also created in a large array of bright colors and styles, yet allow women to reveal their feminity. Female music artists such as Jade and SWV have helped to promote the softer side of hip-hop fashion.
