The movie FINAL FANTASY-THE SPIRITS WITHIN takes place in the year 2065. A metorite has struck the Earth causing untold cataclysms. Inside, an alien horde has been unleashed and is ravaging mankind by sucking up their souls in search of a 8 special souls that could mean their destruction. A survivor of one of these attacks is Dr. Aki Ross. Since her attack, she is recieving cryptic dreams that somehow lead to finding the souls the aliens seek. Aki teams up with her mentor, Dr. Sid, and the anti-alien task force, the Deep Eyes Sqaudron. She hopes that with her strange new gift she can find the key to the alien's downfall. But time is working against them. With Aki's new power comes the price of her own death, and the Earth itself is endagered by an even greater threat by the ambitious General Hein who is going to destroy all life on the planet including the humans with a giant spacebound cannon. While trying to conceal her feelings for the sqaudron leader, Gray Edwards, Aki tries to live out her role by achieving victory for the human race and realizing her destiny and what the true purpose behind the galactic conflict which may lead to her own salvation.
