The Mummy Returns
This movie, much like the first one, is based largely on special effects, which provides an awe inspiring visual display. Yet the special effects, incredible as they are, may have led to the worst sequence of this movie, which was the final fight scene. It wasn't that the fight scenes wasn't exciting or well choreographed, but it was the physical appearance of one of the villians that ruins an otherwise great movie with, until the end, great special effects. Another rather disappointing aspect of this movie is the lack of a role of Dwayne Johnson (the World Wrestling Federations's "The Rock"). This can be compared to Drew Barrymore's role in the original Scream, in which the trailers gave the impression that Barrymore would be a main character in the movie, only to be involved in the first 5 minutes. The same goes for Johnson's role in this movie. Trailers give the impression that Johnson will have more of a role than 5 minutes, but to no avail. The good part about that is that Johnson's character didn't need to be physically present in the movie in order to make it good. In the tradition of the great Indiana Jones movies, The Mummy Returns once again includes actual history in the plot. Ancient Egyptian creations, such as the Pyramids of Giza, and accurate historical portrayals of ancient Egyptian life, adds an extremely interesting aspect to this movie. There was a very good mix of new characters to add to the original characters from the first movie. With an original plot that still maintains ties to the first film, this movie found a way to get better second time around. This movie does a great job of combining comedy, action, and a few thrills. A good plot with an interesting story, great acting, and incredible special effects makes this movie well worth seeing. It is just too bad that the same things that make this movie very good were taken too far and ended up leaving a bad taste.
