Review from Zombie
by Allan Bryce

Film Quality: * * (of 5)
Gore Content: Nil
"Bela Lugosi is a prominent professor by day and
a notorious criminal by night, working out of the
Bowery mission he oversees. When he feels threatened by
his minions, he bumps them off and buries their
bodies in the cellar. But they are revived as
zombies by a drug-addicted doctor and return to
gain vengeance in the spooky climax. Not quite as
bad as it sounds, this Monogram quickie nevertheless marked
the beginning of Bela's slide into obscurity."

Review from The Encyclopedia of Horror Movies
by Phil Hardy

"Although no masterpiece, this is a distinct cut above
the average of Lugosi's later films, no doubt because
it was largely cribbed from his earlier DARK EYES
OF LONDON
(1939). This time Lugosi is a distinguished professor
whose alter ego runs a mission for Bowery
down-and-outs as a cover for his nefarious
activities. Exactly what these activities are (other than murder)
never quite emerges, but the basement where he disposes
of his victims is rather quaintly laid out as
a cemetary complete with graves, and beneath that lies
an intriguingly mysterious sub-chamber seemingly peopled by zombie
ghouls. In the end, Lugosi is shoved into this
pit by a disgruntled underling. It may not make
too much sense, but it does have flashes of imagination."
