Vivien and Clark: As Scarlett and Rhett

A Tribute to 2 great talented stars!

Vivien Leigh was chosen from a field of famous stars including Paulette Goddard and Joan Crawford to play Scarlett O'Hara, a role that would win Vivien her 1st of 2 Oscars.  Her second Oscar came for another Southern Belle portrayal of Blanche DuBois in "A Streetcar named Desire".  Vivien was married to Sir Laurence Olivier (another Oscar Winner).  Her 1st major British motion picture was opposite Laurence Olivier in "Fire over England".  This was the 1st of her many collaborations with the man she would marry in 1940.  Vivien also starred in "Waterloo Bridge", "Anna Karenina", and other pictures. Vivien and Laurence also starred in plays together including "Caesar and Cleopatra" and "A Streetcar named Desire".  Tragically, Vivien died in 1967 after a long illness.  Her last film was "Ship of Fools" in 1965.

Clark Gable was a near unanimous choice for Rhett.  But he nearly didn't take the role.  He was offered a heavy sum so he could pay off his estranged wife, Ria Langham, and get a divorce so he could marry the love of his life, Carole Lombard.  Clark won an Oscar for his role in the film "It happened 1 night" opposite Claudette Colbert.  He had a string of successful movies opposite such stars as Joan Crawford, Myrna Loy, Jean Harlow, Spencer Tracy, and others.  Some of Clark's other movies include "Red Dust", "Mogambo", "San Francisco", and "Mutiny on the Bounty".  Clark died a few months after completing "The Misfits" opposite Marilyn Monroe in 1960.  He was survived by his 5th wife, Kay Spreckels and a son that was born after his death, John Clark Gable.
