Cheap lights in the garage (e.g. those portable outdoor floodlights) make great indoor lighting. Just put a grey light gel (available at a local lighting/theatrical/art store or high school drama department) in front of it. Either a 50% or 25% transparency should be great to knock them down for darker lighting. A 70% transparency or a tough frost/mylar finish to soften without darkening.
