BARRIERS OF A FIRST LOVE
Chapter Sixteen

"So you have her in your sight." Cal’s voice was heard through the cell phone.

"Yep," Spencer replied.

"Nice work. I’ll be there to help you out in a wink."

Rose abruptly turned the car away from the street light it had swerved towards. "Okay. I’m sorry for that," she said, her voice shaky.

"All right. I’ll give you that one."

He put his arm around her so it would be easier for her to relax. After a while, the pursuit still hadn’t let up and they had been silent for some time. Suddenly, Rose tensed.

"What’s wrong?"

"W-we’re surrounded," she replied, her hands shaking uncontrollably on the wheel.

"What do you mean?"

She gulped. "Spencer’s behind us. And Cal is in the car in front of us."

"Call the police."

"There’s no phone in here. Besides, it isn’t against the law to drive in front of someone."

"Yeah, but there is one against harassment."

"Look, Jack, any trouble Cal ever gets into, his daddy will always be there to bail him out."

Rose caught Spencer’s eye in her rearview mirror. He mouthed the word turn and pointed to the left.

"They want us to turn onto the bridge," she told Jack.

"Don’t do it."

Spencer’s car was practically scraping against her own. "I have to." She turned.

Cal’s car turned with theirs, and, even on the bridge, they were surrounded. Jack and Rose sat in silence as Cal and Spencer got out of their cars and walked to them.

Cal rapped on the window on Jack’s side and demanded, "Roll it down."

"Uh-uh."

Cal took a gun out of his jacket pocket, aimed it at Jack through the glass, and said, "Roll it down."

This time, Jack did as he was told.

"Both of you get out of the car."

Spencer circled around to face Jack from the back. With a steel grip, he grabbed Jack’s arms and held them behind his back. Cal stood coldly in front of Jack, one hand still on the trigger of his gun. He looked him up and down, tut-tutted, and suddenly punched him in the jaw with his free hand. Jack’s head shot to the side as Rose screamed out in protest and Spencer let one of Jack’s arms go to restrain her.

"Do you think that you can do as you please with my girlfriend without any consequences?"

"I don’t know how to break this to you, but I don’t think she’s your girlfriend anymore."

"Don’t get smart with me, you little gutter rat!" Spencer had his hand ready over Rose’s mouth to keep her scream from being heard as the trigger of the gun, aimed perfectly at Jack’s head, was pulled.
