BARRIERS OF A FIRST LOVE
Chapter Nine
Jack drove Rose back to where her car was
still parked on the bridge. Before getting in and driving off, they leaned
against the railing and looked up at the night sky.
They were both giddy and sang the song they
had just heard on the radio. They fumbled the words and broke down laughing.
"Thank you for a great time
tonight," she told him.
"The pleasure’s mine."
Suddenly, it became very silent and awkward.
Out of nowhere, Jack said what had been eating at him the whole night.
"Why do you stay in their world?"
"Excuse me?"
"You don’t belong. Why aren’t you
breaking free?"
"Look, Jack, we all want something. But
it’s just particularly hard for me to get it."
"And what is it that you want?"
She looked him in the eye. "Something I
can’t have. I have to go now. Bye."
Before he could stop her, she was in the car
and driving off.
