NEW DAY
Chapter Eight
Jack and Rose rode home, discussing names for
the children. They were still undecided when they pulled into their driveway.
The reporters crowded around their vehicle.
"Miss Rose, when exactly did you start
dating Jack?" a reporter threw into the sea of questions surrounding them.
Rose turned around. She didn't know whether
to answer that or not. Her better instinct told her to reply with the usual,
"No comment."
Jack took Rose's hand, and they quickly made
their way into the house.
Jack shut the door. "Rose, I love
you."
Rose gave Jack a hug. "I love you,
too."
Jack knew it was his chance. Now it was time
to pop the question. "I've loved you ever since the first time I saw you,
when you were dating Keith. You are the love of my life, and I couldn't bear to
lose you. I'm not asking you this because you're having the babies, though it
was a heads up," Jack said. Then, he asked, "Rose DeWitt-Bukater,
will you marry me?"
By that time, Rose had tears forming in the
corners of her eyes. She saw Jack open up a velvet box, and right in front of
her was a golden band with three small diamonds surrounding her birthstone, a
pearl. "Yes, Jack. I will marry you."
Jack slipped the ring on her finger. "I
love you, Rosebud."
Rose pulled Jack into a passionate kiss, then
gave him a hug.
"What are we going to tell the
press?" Rose asked.
"Come here," Jack said, taking
Rose's hand and walking towards the door.
Jack opened the door, and in front of both
Rose and himself were reporters, asking questions and taking pictures.
Jack held up his hand for silence. "Miss
DeWitt-Bukater and myself have an announcement."
Jack looked at Rose, and Rose stepped
forward. "We are engaged."
Jack and Rose heard millions upon millions of
questions being asked, but quickly ran back inside.
"I can't believe we just did that,"
Rose said, now laughing.
Jack pulled Rose to him. "I'm glad we
did."
