FORBIDDEN LOVE
Chapter Four
Several months had passed. Jack
and Rose’s relationship had progressed. They had still kept it a secret. Rose
was amazed. Today, though, it might end…
Rose was in her room, doing
homework, when her telephone rang.
"Hey, Jack. What’s up?"
Rose asked cheerfully.
"Well, I have some upsetting
news. Can you come over?" Jack asked.
"Yeah. It’s only 4:30. I
will be right over," Rose said, hanging up the phone. As she drove towards
Jack’s house, questions popped into her head. What if he doesn’t like me
anymore? What if Cal or Mother caught onto us? Oh, dear God! Rose thought.
Finally, it was the moment of truth…she knocked on Jack’s door.
"Hey, Rose." Jack tried
to smile as he opened the door.
"Hello, Jack. What’s the
matter?" Rose asked, sitting on the couch.
"Well, my job--"
"You work at Old Navy,"
Rose commented.
"Okay, I phrased that wrong.
Sorry. Anyway, I quit there today, because today someone saw me drawing and
offered me a great job in New York," Jack said, waiting for a reaction
from Rose. She got up and walked towards him.
"Jack, I am proud of you,
really. I am gonna miss you terribly. It’s your passion. It’s your dream!"
Rose said, caressing his cheek.
"You. You are also my
dream," Jack said, searching Rose’s eyes.
"I love you, Jack," she
said, turning towards the front door. Jack grabbed her arm lightly.
"Is this over?" Jack’s
eyes looked as if he was going to cry. Unfortunately, Rose was already starting
tear up.
"It is. It will never work.
We live across the country from each other!" Rose said with a weak smile.
"Rose…Rose, you know that
nothing can come between us! You graduate school in two weeks." Jack was
pleading for her not to end this relationship with him.
Rose cried. "Jack, I don’t
know. I love you. I have loved you since I ran into you on the beach."
"I know you have. I love
you, too. That is why we can’t end this. At least not like this." Jack
felt a single tear roll down his face.
"Good-bye. I hope you have a
nice life. Never forget that I will always love you." Rose kissed him on
the cheek.
Jack didn’t know what to do. Rose
walked down the pathway to her fancy car, and back to her life.
Jack shut the door and lay on the
couch, staring at the ceiling and turning on the radio.
*****
Rose was crying hysterically. Why
had she ended things with Jack? Because it will never work, a part of
mind said. That’s not true. You could have moved in with him after you
graduated high school. You would have been out of school already, and your
mother couldn’t have said anything! Rose was going crazy. She turned on the
radio, hearing a song she didn’t want to hear.
For all those times you stood
by me
For all the truth that you made me see
For all the joy you brought to my life
For all the wrong that you made right
For every dream you made come true
For all the love I found in you
I'll be forever thankful, baby
You're the one who held me up
Never let me fall
You're the one who saw me through, through it all.
The night had been perfect. Jack
had held a candlelight picnic in his backyard.
You were my strength when I
was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'cause you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me.
Although nothing intimate had
happened between them, that had been the best night ever. They had made this
song their song.
You gave me wings and made me
fly
You touched my hand
I could touch the sky
I lost my faith
You gave it back to me.
Back at home, Jack heard the same
song. Little did Jack and Rose know they were singing the song together.
You said no star was out of
reach
You stood by me and I stood tall
I had your love I had it all
I'm grateful for each day you gave me
Maybe I don't know that much
But I know this much is true
I was blessed because I was loved by you.
You were my strength when I
was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'cause you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me.
You were always there for me
The tender wind that carried me
A light in the dark shining your love into my life
You've been my inspiration
Through the lies you were the truth
My world is a better place because of you.
You were my strength when I
was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'cause you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me.
You were my strength when I
was weak
You were my voice when I couldn't speak
You were my eyes when I couldn't see
You saw the best there was in me
Lifted me up when I couldn't reach
You gave me faith 'cause you believed
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me.
I'm everything I am
Because you loved me.
Rose didn’t even notice when a
drunk driver hit her car.
Thirty Minutes Later
Jack was lying on the sofa when
the phone rang.
"Hello," Jack said, his
voice hoarse from crying.
"Jack! Oh, my God!"
Gabby yelled through the phone, crying hysterically.
Jack sat upright, knowing
something had happened to Rose.
"Jack. It’s Rose. You need
to come down to the hospital!"
"All right, Gabby. I will be
there in ten minutes!" Jack yelled, and drove to the hospital.
