JACK AND ROSE: PRESENT TIME
Chapter
Forty-Nine
Jack turned over in
his sleep to look at his alarm clock. It was almost seven. He'd have to get up
and get ready for school in a few minutes. He knew that by know, Rose had just
gotten out of the shower and was picking out an outfit.
School didn't
really bother Jack. He was just happy to be home. After a couple weeks at the
hospital, a person realizes how lucky they are.
Jack could hear
Rose blow-drying her hair in a distance. He knew he probably wouldn't be able
to fall asleep. Jack stumbled down the stairs in search for breakfast. Ruth was
leaning against the counter, enjoying a cup of coffee. John was sitting down at
the kitchen table, reading the newspaper.
"Good morning,
Jack." Ruth greeted. "How you feeling?"
"I'm feeling
fine," Jack said as he rubbed his eyes. "Good morning."
"Sarah made
some waffles before she left," Ruth said. "Would you like some?"
"No
thanks," Jack said. "I'm just gonna grab some cereal."
Ruth nodded.
"Is Rose awake yet?"
"Yeah, of
course," Jack said. "She usually gets up around six right?"
"Jack, are you
sure your well enough to go to school today?" Ruth asked as she felt his
head for a fever. She and Jack had gotten extremely close. Jack had always
thought of Ruth as a witch, but ever since she got involved with his uncle he
noticed a good side of her. He thought of her, in a way, as a second mom.
"Are you
sure?" John asked. Jack rolled his eyes and nodded. Everybody acted like
Jack was still in the hospital. He hated it.
Just then, Rose
came walking down the stairs. "Mother," she complained. "Will
you please tell John for now on not to use all of the hot water? It was
freezing!"
"Calm down
Rose," John said. "I'm sorry, I..."
"No!"
Rose said. "I don't want any of them lame excuses! Whenever I wanna take a
nice, warm shower, I get in there and it's as cold as the Atlantic Ocean!"
"Look, I'm
sorry Rose," John said, flipping the page of his newspaper.
"What's her
problem?" Jack whispered to Ruth, not wanting Rose to hear. But, she did.
"I don't have
a problem, Jack," Rose said sarcastically.
"Don't worry
about her Jack, I think she started her period the the other day. That's P.M.S.
for you," Ruth said.
Everyone looked at
Rose for a reaction. "Whatever!" she said as she made a W with her
hands. This family knew way to much about each other.
Rose heard her
pager go off and she picked it up off of the kitchen table. "Rose, I don't
like you leaving your things on the table," Ruth said.
"Oh,
right." Rose said. "Everything is my fault." She picked up her
pager to see who it was. "Great, now Katie is paging me!"
Rose ran up the
stars and went to her room. She made sure to slam the door.
Ruth took another
drink of her coffee. "And I wish she wouldn't wear lavender."
Jack just chuckled.
This family was strange. Ruth and himself got along great. Yet, Rose and John
couldn't even stand being in the same room with each other. They had never had
a nice family dinner, as long as Jack could remember.
"Well, I gotta
go get ready for school," Jack said as re ran up the stairs.
"Those two are
such characters," John said.
"I do
apologize. I don't know what's gotten into her," Ruth said.
"It' okay.
Adolescence is a tuff stage."
"But Jack
seems to be doing fine," Ruth said.
John just looked at
Ruth. "Yeah, boys are different than girls."
About 10 minutes
later Jack came back down stairs dressed in jeans and a basketball jersey.
"Is Rose ready yet?" Ruth asked.
Jack immediately turned
around and walked back up the stairs to Rose's room. He knocked on the door.
"Rose, ya ready?"
"I'm not
coming out! I don't have anything to wear!"
"Ah, come on
Rosey. You look good in anything."
"You're just
saying that because I'm your girlfriend."
Jack sighed.
"Can I come in?"
"Yeah.."
Rose muttered.
Jack entered the
room. Rose was in her bra and underwear, but they didn't even care about things
like that any more. They barely even noticed things like that any more. It
didn't matter.
"How about
this?" Jack asked as he held up a light yellow shirt with jean shorts.
"Yeah,
right," Rose said as she took the outfit and threw it onto her already
messy bed.
"Look,"
Rose said. "I'm sorry. I'm just in a really bad mood this morning. It's
the beginning of the week and everything..."
"It's okay,
Rosey. I understand. "You and your period and all."
"Jack! I'm not
on my period, despite what my mother says."
Jack went over to
Rose and wrapped his arms around her waist. "You know, we haven't done it
for like a month," Jack said.
"Done
what?" Rose said with a giggle.
"The
nasty," Jack said. They both started to crack up with laughter.
"Come
on!" John yelled from downstairs. "You kids have got to leave in ten
minutes!"
Jack smiled.
"That will give us plenty of time."
Jack picked Rose up
and layed her on the bed, all of this while kissing her. Rose started to un-zip
his jeans. He helped her pull them off of him. Jack took of his jersey quickly,
not wanting his lips away from Rose. He un-hooked her bra and pulled off her
underwear.
When they were
completely naked, they heard a knock on door. "Shit," Jack mumbled.
"You guys
coming?" John asked.
"We'll be down
in a minute," Jack said.
"Did you lock
the door?" Rose asked.
Jack looked over at
the unlocked door. He dove out of bed and safely locked it.
"Did you just
lock the door?" John asked.
"Ummmm
no."
"Let me
in!" He demanded.
They quickly put on
all of their clothes and pretended like they were looking through clothes for
Rose the whole time. Rose grabbed the outfit Jack had layed out for her before.
Finally, they let
John in. John came in and looked around the room, noticing their un-easyness.
Then John noticed it.
"And Jack's
underwear just happen to be laying on your bed?" John asked, pointing to
the bed.
Jack covered his
face with his hand.Rose just stood there looking straight into John's eyes.
Jack had no idea where Rose got all this courage.
"What do you
kids have to say about this?"
"We..." Jack
was gonna tell him that he was trying on something, or he was changing,
anything but what Rose told him.
"He was giving
me bone."
Jack and John both
were shocked. Jack just shrugged his shoulders. "That's it!" John
said. "We are going to have a family meeting tonight! I've had it with you
two," he said as he left. This time, he slammed the door.
