SECRET AGENT DAWSON
Chapter Twenty-Seven
Tobey and Lisa enjoyed their
honeymoon, but when they got back home, everything was in utter disaster. Kevin
and Cassie had not been seen. Christian and Paola were now dating; Tommy and
Jen had gotten married over the weekend and were now in Hawaii on their
honeymoon. Amanda, Bunny, Ashley, Paola, and Jake were the only ones working.
Jack and Rose, on the other hand, had been having problems. Rose had told Jack
that she wanted him to take a vacation and that he should spend a little more
time with her. But he had just gone out the door and left her behind. She knew
then that something was bothering him.
To get away from his problems, he
started working on a case with Jake. Jack took some of his stuff and went to
London with Jake to work on the case with James and John over at the Eastern
Alliance. Everything was supposed to be low profile, but there must have been a
leak somewhere, because before Jack knew it, he was running from bullets down
an alley somewhere in Bristol, London. In the process of running, he was shot
in the shoulder and in the leg. When he reached a safe place, he fell to the
ground.
Agent Anderson saw Jack go down
and ran to his side. He was able to escape with Jack to an unknown safe house.
John Anderson caught up with James Bond and told him everything. Jack was
immediately taken to their private hospital. The bullet appeared to have only
grazed Jack's head. He was lucky, very lucky.
*****
Rose was practicing her drawings.
She had made a portrait of Jack using an old photo she had found. When the
phone rang, she expected Jack to apologize. She didn't expect to hear bad news.
Jake had called. "Rose, Jack
has been shot."
"Oh, my God. Is he all
right?" Rose dropped her pencil.
"He was grazed by a bullet
in the head. He seems to have lost his memory. Kevin is picking him up at the
airport," Jake said a hurried voice.
"All right. When will he
arrive?" Rose was very worried about Jack.
"Well, he left early. He
should be home soon," Jake said, closing off the conversation.
"Thank you, Jake. Thanks for
taking the time to call me." Rose got up, ready to call the agency.
"You’re welcome, Rose,"
Jake said, then clicked off.
Rose dialed speed dial #1,
remembering the first time Jack had told her about it. When they said Wong's
Laundry, she asked for Kevin Dawson. Kevin wasn't there. It appeared he had
gone to pick Jack up. When she heard that, she got her purse and headed out the
door.
*****
Rose drove to the agency, and
luckily, her ID and badge were still operational. She went through security and
saw Ashley at the desk.
"Hey, Ashley. Are you the
only one here?” Rose asked, looking around.
"Nope. Paola, Lisa, and
Tobey are in the back. I am guessing you heard about Jack?" Ashley looked
at her. She looked a fright.
"Yeah. Any word?" she
asked her.
"Not yet. Kevin went to pick
him up. John Anderson was with him on the flight from London." Ashley gave
her the info that she knew, which wasn't much.
"That's good. I am just
wondering how much memory he's lost." Rose sat down, then got up.
"I don't know." Ashley
looked at her. She had never seen her so pent-up.
"Well, I am gonna go talk to
Lisa and Paola," Rose said, walking down the corridor.
"All right. Nice seeing you
again," Ashley said, looking at the poor girl.
"Likewise." Rose smiled
back.
*****
When Rose walked into the
conference room at the back, she could hear Lisa and Paola talking. Lisa
noticed Rose first.
"Rose! Oh, my God! It’s so
good to see you! You heard about Jack?" Lisa walked up to her and hugged
her.
"Yeah, I did. It's the
reason I am here." She hugged her back and felt kind of relaxed.
"What happened?" Rose asked, sitting down.
"All we know is that Jack
and Jake were working on a case. Then they went to Bristol, London to work with
James and John. No one really knows what happened. All they know is that
someone leaked and they caught Jack and John walking down the street,
apparently to get something to eat. Then bullets started flying. Jack ran for
cover and so did John. The only thing is that Jack didn't make it, so John got
him and took him to a safe house, and they moved him for surgery and sent him
back when he was feeling better," Lisa explained to her.
"Why didn't anyone call me
sooner?" Rose was a little angry that nobody had called.
"We didn't know. We only got
word today, Rose." Lisa could understand how she felt. If it was her
Tobey, she would be a little upset, too.
*****
A bunch of commotion was heard
when they heard Ashley mention Jack. They all ran out to see Jack. He had a
bandage on his head and he looked awfully thin. Jack remembered Lisa, Paola,
Ashley, Kevin, and even his friend Tobey, but he didn't even say hi to Rose.
"Kevin, how is he?"
Rose asked.
"Ask him yourself,
Rose." Kevin held Jack in case he fell over.
"How are you?" Rose
looked at him. He looked so different.
"I am fine. Who are
you?" Jack had no idea who she was. All he could guess was that she was a
new girl in the agency.
"I am your wife, Rose
Dawson. Don't you remember me?" Rose looked into his eyes.
"No, sorry. I don't,"
Jack said truthfully.
"Will he all right?"
Rose looked at Kevin.
"Yeah. He will be fine. Why
don't you take him home? I will talk to him later." Kevin parted from Jack
and let Rose take over.
"All right. Let me get my
purse; I left it in the conference room." She went to go get it.
Jack saw Paola. He looked at her
differently. He hugged her; Lisa looked at him with a weird expression. He had
never done that before.
"Paola, I missed you so
much." He hugged her.
"I missed you, too,
Jack." She hugged him back.
"Paola, am I really married
to that girl?" He backed off and looked at her differently.
"Yes, you are." Paola
wondered what was going on.
"Why were we never
married?" Jack asked.
"Don't know." It's was
true. Paola loved him so much, she didn't know why they didn't get together in
the first place.
"Okay. I am ready to
go." She took Jack's hand and walked with him to their car. He sat in the
seat, looking at her strangely. She put on her seatbelt and drove home.
*****
When they got there, she helped
him out. She took her keys out of her purse and opened the door. He waited
there, not saying a word. When she opened the door, he stepped inside and sat
down on the couch, but then felt dizzy and went to his room. The sheets were
messed up, but he didn't care. Rose went to the fridge to get him something to
drink after closing the door. When she saw him go into the room, she figured he
must have been tired from making the trip home.
She went to their room and set
the juice on the dresser. He lay there, trying to fall asleep.
"Jack, are you tired?"
She shook his shoulder.
"A little. So, what's your
name?" He turned over and looked at her.
"Rose. Remember?" She
hated to remind him, but she didn't have a choice.
"Yeah, sorry. I remember
everything, but for some reason I can't remember you." He looked at her
again with that same expression.
"I think I know why."
Rose sat down by his side.
"Why?" He looked at her
strangely.
"We had a fight before you
left, Jack." She sat there with her hands on her lap, looking down.
"What kind of fight?"
he asked.
"Beats me. The only thing
that happened was that I told you I wanted you to take a vacation and you got
mad. As to why, I don't know." She looked at him, wanting him to remember
her.
"Oh. How did we meet?"
He wanted to know everything he possibly could about this beautiful stranger he
was married to.
"We met here. See, I was
your next door neighbor and I came to use your phone. From then on, you told me
to live with you. About a day and a half later, we had sex. Then, you brought
me into the agency." She smiled at the thought when she reminisced.
"Wow. I must have been
sex-starved or something." He smiled at her.
"Yeah. You’re right about
that. You were incredible." She smiled back, wanting to be in his arms.
"Was I?" He blushed.
"Sure were." She smiled
and laughed.
He smiled at her and really
looked into her beauty. He could now see why he had married her. She was
beautiful.
"What?" she asked,
noticing that he was looking at her with curiosity.
"Nothing." He took his
eyes off her.
"So, how long do you have to
leave that bandage on your head?" She touched his head.
"Don't know. I am supposed
to see a doctor tomorrow." He lay back, backing away from her.
"You were very lucky. I just
wished you had called me." She was hurt when he backed away from her.
"Sorry," he said,
knowing he didn't mean it.
"It's not your fault. It's
mine. I guess I got mad that you were spending too much time at the office, and
I wanted you home. I love you, Jack. I am sorry for not understanding."
She was hurting so much, but she didn't let it show.
"It's all right, Rose. Being
a secret agent is good for a bachelor, but for a married man it takes a lot
more. Especially if kids are involved. We don't have any, do we?" He
hadn't seen any.
"Not yet," Rose said
sadly.
"Ah…well, I guess that will
happen in the future, won't it?" He lay down, getting into a comfortable
position.
"I guess it will, Jack. What
happened to you in London?" she asked, changing the subject.
"All I remember is running.
Then something hit me in the shoulder, then in the leg, and when I almost got
someplace safe something went past my head and I started to bleed. Then I just
collapsed. That's all I can remember, besides waking up in a hospital." He
patted the pillow.
"Well, get some rest. I am
gonna go into the living room and work on some stuff." She hadn't a thing
to do, but she figured he needed the rest.
"All right." He turned
around and closed his eyes. He had no idea why, but he had a feeling she meant
more to him than he ever let on.
