SECRET AGENT DAWSON
Chapter Forty-Two

Jack got to the hospital soaking wet, but he didn't care. He found Rose in her room. She was awake and staring out the window.

He walked in dripping wet. She didn't bother to turn to look at him, so he knew now that she knew that she had been pregnant.

"Rose?" Jack called her.

She turned and looked at him. Then she turned her back on him. "Rose, I know you must hate me now, and I am sorry. I didn't mean to make it sound like I was just gonna leave you. I realize now that I can't, because I love you."

"It's too late, Jack. I will file for divorce as soon as we get to the states. It was a mistake marrying you, and I realize it now." Rose didn't want to look at him. It only hurt her more.

"Rose, please don't do this. I never wanted us to be like this." Jack went to her.

Rose got up, frustrated. "What do you mean? You’re the one who asked for a divorce in the first place. You cheated on me twice, and I don't want to see or hear from you ever again."

"Rose, you don't mean that. You’re just upset." He stood next to her when he saw her crying.

"Don't touch me." She started to hit him, and he took her punches, but he never let her go.

She cried in his arms for the baby that she had lost. She loved Jack, and she knew that if he didn't want her, this would be the last time she would ever see him. She was strong. She wasn't going to beg for him to stay with her. It was his choice, if he knew what he wanted.

"Rose, I promised Veronica I would meet her today at noon. If I die today, I want you to know I always loved you, no matter what I did." Jack looked into her eyes as if it were the last time he was going to see her.

"You won't die, Jack. I want to see you back here when you’re finished with her." She smiled and kissed his lips.

"I promise, Rose." He kissed her forehead and left.

Jack walked back to his car, and although it was slightly banged up, he still drove it. He went back to Chloe and Emma to see them.

Chloe's father answered the door. "I see you’re back. Back so soon?"

"Look, I just came to say good-bye, all right? Chloe's a grown woman. If she doesn't want to have anything to do with me, I'll leave her alone, but I will not stand here and explain that I want to say good-bye to my daughter to you." Jack looked at him with a sly stare.

"Fine. They’re upstairs." Jason let him go.

Jack passed him and flew up the stairs. He saw Chloe dressing Emma. She looked so beautiful.

"Daddy." She went to him and hugged him.

"Hello, sweetpea." He hugged her back.

"Are you gonna stay with us today?" Emma was happy to see her daddy there.

"Sorry, I can't. Not today. I have some things to take care of, but after that I will come and see you as much as I can." He hugged her and started to cry.

"Daddy, why are you crying?" Emma asked, concerned.

"Chloe, I can't...." He walked to the balcony and stood there.

"Honey, Daddy and Mommy need to talk. You go and finish up your breakfast, all right?" Chloe took her halfway to the door.

"Okay, Mommy." Emma looked at her dad standing there, hearing his sobs.

When Emma left, Chloe went up to Jack and held him. "What's wrong?"

"I went to tell Rose I wanted a divorce and she told me that she was sick, but she passed out and she was bleeding," Jack explained.

"Is she all right?" Chloe asked, concerned about his situation.

"Yeah, but she lost our child, Chloe." Jack walked over and sat on the bed.

"She was pregnant?" Chloe sat with him.

"Yeah. I feel so guilty for leaving her." He put his head in his hands.

"Don't be, Jack. I never told you I wanted you to play daddy to Emma. Of course, you’re her birth father, but if you need to leave and be with Rose, go ahead. I love you, but if I can't have you, then I want you to go. Take care of her, because if I was in that situation, I would want you there by my side." Chloe meant every word.

"You’re such an understanding person, Chloe. Always seeing to the care of others before yourself." Jack hugged her.

"Hey, that's me. Are you still gonna go see Veronica?" Chloe looked at him, and he was not in a state to fight for his life when others needed him.

"Yeah, at noon. Which is in two hours." Jack looked at his watch.

"You’re gonna win, Jack. I know, because not only do you have to fight for Rose, you have to come and tell Emma you’re gonna be with her always." Chloe patted his hand.

"Well, I don't know what Veronica has up her sleeve. But I don't wish her dead." Jack had never meant to hurt Veronica at all when they were young. It had all been just fun and games.

"That's good, Jack, because I wish you dead." Veronica stood in the doorway.

"Veronica, what are you doing here?" Jack looked at her in surprise.

"Chloe's father let me stay. And don't worry about Emma. I don't hurt children. It's what I was wishing you had given me when I was dating you." Veronica walked in on Chloe and Jack, coming into the room.

"Veronica, for all the times we had sex back then, I would have thought you would have," Jack said sarcastically.

"True, but I wasn't able to have children," Veronica told him.

"Well, Jack, it's almost noon. It's almost that time." Veronica was looking forward to killing him.

"Yeah. I will meet you in the courtyard in a half hour so we can finish this once and for all." Jack stood up.

"All right. See you there." She winked.

Veronica loved torturing him. It made her revenge all the sweeter. She knew he was going to die today, because she would not stop until he did.
