SUMMER IN SANTA MONICA
Chapter Five

In third period, Rose took her seat next to Jack. This was Biology and Rose was Jack's partner.

Jack was sitting there and decided to write Rose a note:

What's up?
Jack

Not much. Being bored, you?
Rose

Nothing. Hey, I'm sorry for being a jerk.
Jack

Well, I guess I could have been nicer too.
Rose

So, are we okay? We don't hate each other, do we?
Jack

No, I guess not. I think we need to give my mother and Tom a break.
Rose

Yeah, I agree.
Jack

Suddenly, the bell rang and Jack walked Rose to fourth period, and then went to his fourth period.

"See you, Jack," Rose said.

"See you, Rose," Jack said.

"Hey, girl," Tasha said.

"Hey, you," Rose said.

"Are you still fighting with Jack?" Tasha asked.

"No. I think we can get along," Rose said.

"He's staying for the summer, isn't he?" Tasha asked.

"I think so. Maybe even longer," Rose said, putting her books on her desk.

Tasha put her books down on her desk. "Well, he is kind of cute."

"I know, but he's kind of like my brother. That, and Greg and I are so close," Rose said.

"Well, ask him if he likes me," Tasha said.

In Jack's fourth period, Greg and Jack were talking.

"So, what do you think of Tasha?" Greg asked.

"She's kind of cute, but to tell you the truth, I like Rose," Jack said.

"She's one of a kind, but I don't think I'm ready to be serious and she is," Greg said.

"I'll tell her you want to break up with her," Jack said.

"Thanks. Also, ask Tasha if she likes me," Greg said.

"I sit next to her in sixth period. I'll tell her then," Jack said.

In sixth period, Jack told Rose about Greg, and Rose cried on Jack's shoulder.

"It's okay, Rose. You can date better people than that," Jack said, stroking her long, curly hair.

"Thank you, Jack. You're my best friend," Rose said.

They drove home that day, laughing at themselves. Ruth and Tom were happy that there weren't going to be any more fights.
