SUMMER IN SANTA MONICA
Chapter Six

It was the last day of Rose's junior year at Santa Monica High School.

"Hey, girl," Tasha said.

"Hey. Have you seen Jack? I really need to tell him something," Rose said.

"He's sulking around campus somewhere. I'm not sure," Tasha said.

"Hey, Rose. Hey, babe," Greg said to Rose and Tasha.

"Hey. You coming tonight?" Tasha said, kissing him.

"Yeah. Are you, Rose?" Greg asked her.

"To what?" Rose asked.

"The party for all of the new seniors," Tasha said.

"Sure, but Jack's got to come, too," Rose said.

"Fine with me. He's staying for senior year, isn't he?" Greg asked.

"I don't think so. He's staying for the summer," Rose said.

Jack walked up behind Rose. "Hey, you."

"Hey," Rose said.

"You coming to the party tonight?" Greg asked.

"What party?" Jack asked.

"It's for all of the new seniors," Rose said.

"Sure, I'll come. Are you coming, Rose?" Jack asked.

"Yeah, I'm coming," Rose said.

"Okay. We need to get to the bus," Jack said, taking Rose's hand.

"See you, Greg. See you, Tasha," Rose said.

"Bye," Greg and Tasha said in unison.

"We have got to hook those two up," Tasha said.

"I agree, but how?" Greg asked.

"What do you say to spin the bottle tonight?" Tasha asked.

"Jack? What do you think? The jeans and midriff shirt, or the short dress?" Rose asked.

"Jeans and midriff," Jack said.

"Thanks," Rose said.

"Dad, can we take the BMW tonight?" Jack asked.

"Jack, I don't think you and Rose should be spending this much time together. You're related," Tom said.

"Technically, we are, but if you want reality, we're not," Rose said, coming downstairs.

"Fine, take the car," Tom said, throwing them the keys.

Jack caught the keys. "I'm driving."

"I'll drive home, then," Rose said.

"Let's go," Jack said, offering his arm to Rose.

"Why, thank you," Rose said, taking his arm.

"Get out of here," Ruth said, with Tom at her side.

"Bye, Ruth. Bye, Dad," Jack said.

"Bye, Mother. Bye, Tom," Rose shouted from the car.

"I can't get over those two," Ruth said.

"Me, either," Tom said.
