It's true. I played rock 'n' roll in front of people for the first time at my high school talent show.
The band was called THE BASICS, and basic we were. After struggling through one of my first original songs, "Lonely Girl," we fumbled a 15-minute version of "Jenny Jenny." I did not get lucky that night. My friend Marc Silverberg thought that with some work "being in the band" might in fact aid in achieving said goal. So, he picked up the bass and with Casey Fleming on drums, and later Mark Beuchler on lead guitar, we formed THE CHECKS. The Checks played all of the L.A. rock clubs and I decided to jam our music down the public throat by using our demos in my own movies "Assault of the Party Nerds" and "Virgin High."
Once we had some exposure, there were dozens of other placements in several other films including the Checks classic "Touch Me Tender" in "California Casanova" starring Jerry Orbach and "Those Days Are Gone," in Fred Olen Ray's "The Kid With X-Ray Eyes" starring Justin Berfield and Robert Carradine. College ended and so did The Checks (for now anyway.) Flying solo, my more recent recordings "Big Black Cadillac" and "All Alone" have been heard in the HBO Film "Desert Thunder" with Daniel Baldwin. When I shot "Kickboxing Academy," starring Chyler Leigh and Steven Bauer, I wrote songs to fit specific scenes in the film. Most of these cuts along with some Checks Classics like "Drivin' All Night," are on The Compilation CD available here.
Lately, I've been working with accomplished pianist/arranger Michael Morrell, and we just completed a CD of instrumental grooves ranging from jazz to hip-hop, The only vocal cut in the collection is "Buddha in a Banzai," our "single." "Grooves" is also available here.
I'm always writing and performing so stay tuned!
