The War Department
The scene switches to a building of typewriters who deal with writing letters to the families of whose son/brother/cousin ect that died in the war. An elderly woman shuffles through the letters, finding something remarkable. She reports it to the lieutenant, and from him the news goes to the supervising captain.
Captain-Colonel, I've got something you should know about.
Colonel-Yes?
Captain-These two men died in Normandy. This one at Omaha Beach.
Colonel-Sean Ryan.
Captain-This one at Utah.
Colonel-Peter Ryan.
Captain-This man was killed last week in New Guinea.
Colonel-Daniel...Ryan.
Captain-The three men are brothers, sir. I just learned that this afternoon their mothers going to be getting all three telegrams. That's not all. There's a fourth brother, the youngest. He parachuted in with the Hundred and first airborne before the invasion. He's somewhere in Normandy. We don't know where.
Colonel-Is he alive?
Captain-We don't know.
Colonel-Come with me.
The scene changes once again to a house atop a hill. Ryans mother stands inside doing the dishes when she notices a car coming up the road. She goes out on the porch and falls to her knees, knowing that her son(s) have been killed.
