Chapter Four: Confustion

Nick had this thing for whenever he would feel sad and lonley. He would take out the picture of him and Abbey. It was like that picture could magicly make everything better and he would no longer feel that way. He still wondered what happened to her. Still mad at her for not telling him she was leaving but still wouldn't mind seeing her again. Would he be mad? Probably. Would he lash out on her? Oh yeah.

His thoughts then drifted to Mackenzie. 'I know I have seen her someplace before. But then again when your a Backstreet Boy how many different people do you meet in one day?' Nick sighed and put the picture back on his nightstand. He got up and went downstairs to find that his family had just come home.

"NICK!" Aaron yelled while running to his older brother. "I missed ya."

Nick laughed hugging Aaron. "I missed you too buddy!" Nick also hugged and got welcomed by his other siblings.

Nick's Dad then came up to him and gave him a hug.

"Hey, sorry we weren't here when ya got in. I had a day off so I thought I would take the kids out." Bob explained.

Nick shook his head. "That's alright Mom told us. We got settled in alright and met your little house guest. Boy she's somethin." He rolled his eyes. "Is she always like that?"

"She wasn't to me. She's really nice and very sweet." Brian smiled coming from outside with Mackenzie behind him.

"Listen to Brian he's smart." Mac smirked only setting Nick off more. She knew what she was doing and playing it for all it was worth. "And in answer to your question only to you." She said reffering to the question Nick asked his Dad. Nick was about to say something back when Bob interupted him.

"Now kids get along." Bob said. "Besides you guys are more alike than you think." With that he left the room to the kitchen to help Jane with dinner. Leaving the three confused.

Nick turned to them. "Are you always like this? What did I ever do to you? Your all nice to Brian but no not me!"

Brian smirked. "It's because I'm more special then you! Duh!" Mac laughed.

"I'm going to go now." Mac headed up the stairs towards her room never answering his question. Brian and Nick watched.

"I really don't understand her." Nick muttered then turned back to Brian.

"I know somethin you don't know!" Brian yelled suddenly with a cheesey smile on his face.

"And that would be?"

"Can't tell ya. I'm not allowed. Sorry Buddy!" Brian patted Nick on the shoulder then turned around and walked to his room to change leaving Nick more confused than ever.

"Is there something I'm missing?" He asked outloud. Nick walked into the kitchen looking fo his Mom. He wanted to find out more about Mackenzie.

Finding her he asked "Mom ya got a minute? I need to talk to you in private."

"Um yeah sure." She turned to Bob. "Take over for me while I'm gone and don't burn the food."

They walked into the family room where there was nobody and sat down.

"So what do ya need to talk about?" Jane asked?

"Mackenzie. What's her deal? I've been trying to be nice to her but whenever we talk it's short and sarcastic comments. Like she already want's nothing to do with me. She likes to refer to me as the 'big bad rock start' I mean really what's up with that?"

Jane sat back thinking of a way to answer his questions. 'Is this the right time to tell him?' She thought. She knew that if Nick found out he would be mad. Jane rememeber all the time he came to her saying he missed Abbey. But is this the right time to say anything? She decided against it and gave the next best answer she could think of.

"She hasn't had it easy Nick. She just got kicked out of College and she's had a hard life. He parent's got divorced when she was 13 and her Mom recently died. I'm sure after awhile you guys will warm up to each other. Your more alike than you think." Again Nick was confused hearing this for the secrond time in 10 minutes. "Just give it some time. Is that all you wanted?"

Nick looked at his Mom. "Yeah that's all." Jane smiled and walked back into the kitchen.

---------------

"Time for dinner!" Jane yelled out everybody hoping they would hear so she didn't have to yell it again. Soon everybody came piling into the room and sat down ready to eat.

Nick was the last to come in seeing the only seat left was next to Mackenzie. He sighed taking a seat.

"Ya know" Mac turned to him. "I'm not the only one who doesn't want to sit next to somebody else in this room." She said refering to Nick.

Nick turned to her again. "Then move."

"Excuse me. I was here first and besides do you see another open seat here?" Mackenzie looked around at the full table hoping Nick would get the hint. "I'm not moving on account of you." Mac sighed. This was not how their first meeting in years was suppost to be like. She couldn't help being a smart ass toward him and enjoyed making him mad. She knew she was getting to him. I can't belive he still doesn't know who I am. I should wait awhile and then shock him with the news.

Now she was getting to him. He could tell she enjoyed teasing him but put up will it anyways not wanting his Mom to say anything to him now knowing a bit more about Mackenzie.

The rest of the dinner was spent in quiet with Nick and Mac throwing glares at each other. When it was over everybody went their seperate ways. Most leaving to their rooms Nick among them. He needed some time alone to think.

---------------

About few hours later Nick was lying on his bed watching TV and drawing when heard a knock on his bedroom door. Thinking it was Brian he answer "Come in!" not knowing who it really was.

Mackenzie walked into the door wearing her PJ's and looking around the room.

"Oh it's you. Do you want something?" Nick asked.

Mackenzie looked around the room and answered "Yeah Jane asked me..." But stopped short when a picture on the night stand caught her eye. She turned to Nick. "Who's this?" Silently hoping he didn't find out her secret.

"Oh that's my best friend Abbey. Well, she used to be my best friend and then moved...why am I telling you this anyways?" Mackenzie shrugged.

"Is there something you would like?"

She turned to attention bake to Nick taking her eyes off the picture that was taken years ago. Remembering she had one of her own. "Yeah why else would I have come in here?"

Nick looked at her expectantly. "And..."

"Oh Jane want's to know if you would like to "show" me around tomorrow. Believe me it was not my idea but it makes her happy. Plus I'm new here. I just got in last week and have been house bound."

"For real? Damn...I guess." He looked doubtful. A day with little Miss Bitch Mackenzie but if it makes his Mother happy...

"Tell her yes I guess."

"Alrighty." Mac took one last look at Nick then the picture and left to go downstairs to see Jane and ask her about Nick taking her tomorrow. Truth was she wanted to get to know Nick better and then tell him who she really was so she asked him using Jane as an excuse.

Nick looked back at the picture. 'She was being a bit too nice to me just now.' He thought before turning in. Tomorrow would be a long day.
