Chapter Five: Why Me?

The next morning the sun was shining into Nick's room. He woke up groaning when he realized what the day had in store for him. 'Ahh...a day with Mac..great! Why me? Maybe today will look better. Who knows.' He got up and walked to his closest to get dressed and then headed to Brian's room thinking he would ask and see if he would come with them today. He knocked waiting for a reply and got none so he went downstairs to find this Mom cooking breakfast.

"Mornin Mom!" Nick smiled while kissing her on the cheek.

"Hi sweetie! Ready for a day with Mackenzie?"

"Oh yeah..I'm just looking forward to it. Too emotional for words..." He paused. "Actually words cannot describe how I feel." Nick added sarcastically. He sighed. "Only for you Mom. I wouldn't do this for anybody else. Remember that."

Jane smiled. "Thanks sweetie I know you don't like this but she hasn't been out of this house since she got in. Just give it some time I'm sure it will get better."

"I sure hope so Mom." He sighed.

"Besides you guys aren't that bad towards each other. I mean it could be worse. You could be at each others throats constantly."

"True. So why am I the one doing this? You know I haven't been here many times. This is my first visit to the house."

"Because you need to get to know this place Nick. You will be coming to visit again and I want you to know your way around. I know you have been to Cali many time before so I'm sure you'll get yourself used to it."

"Yeah yeah. And what about Brian? He's still sleepin. I don't want to wake him up."

"Then don't. I'll tell him where your at when he wakes up." Just then Mackenzie made her way in to the kitchen.

"Hi-ya guys! Hey blondie ya ready for today?" She asked smirking.

"Oh yes words cannot describe ho-" Jane cut him off.

"Okay let's not go through that again GO!" Jane laughed and waved them off. They headed towards the front door forgetting about the food Jane was making and out to the car. Once they got in Nick realized he had no idea where he was going.

"Um where do you want to go?"

"I dunno. I'm new here. You figure out this place you've been here before. I've lived in Cali for some time now but not in this area so I wouldn't know."

Nick sighed. "Yeah." He pulled out of the driveway and decided he would go for the mall. It was the only place he really knew of to take her. The ride was pretty silent except for the radio that was blaring some pop station. Pulling into the mall driveway he turned to Mac and asked "It's okay if we go to the mall right? I can't really think of any other place." Mac nod! ded.

Once in the mall they took a look around. Going into stores and trying to wacky clothes and making fun of each other. They spent the whole day there.

"Look all I'm saying is that you look like a slut." It was true. She had on a something that looked like Britney Spears would willingly wear it.

"Well, thank you. Are you always this pleasant?"

"You asked for my opinion and I gave it. If your not happy with it then shut up cause I don't wanna hear it."

"Who the hell do you think you are?"

"I'm your ride so think about it. I'm only doing this for my Mom. Trust me I don't want to be here."

"Whatever. I'm not going to fight with you it's pointless. Do you want to get something to eat?"

"Yeah sure." They decided to stop on at this pizza place that was there.

They didn't really talk too much just sat there and ate until Mac said something. "So Nick..tell me about that picture..."

Nick looked at her surprised never thinking she would be interested and confused at how quick she could go from bitch to angel. "What's there to tell? She was my best friend and when I went on tour for the first time she moved without telling me. I called one day and she was gone." Looking slightly sad he added "It hurt. It hurt real bad."

Mackenzie looked at Nick not believing what he had said. Had it really hurt that much? "Great." She muttered.

"Huh? Anyway now I just consider it a lost cause. I'll probably never see her again. But I do miss her."

"Well, I'm sure she had a good reason for not telling you. What do you think would happen if you met up with her again?"

Nick looked at her trying to figure what she was getting at and why she was so concerned. "Ah...how would I react? I would probably freak out and start asking questions. Why?"

"Oh no reason. Can we get goin now? We've been here all day. I just want to go home. Forget about the rest of the sight seeing this isn't even fun anymore."

Nick nodded and once again they headed to car but this time with their hands full of bags.

---------------

"Mom we're back!" Nick yelled hoping his Mom would hear him but Brian was the one that came down the stairs.

"Hey guys I heard you had a day out." He smirked knowing it probably wasn't all that much fun.

"Oh yes it was great Bri." Mac answered. "Hey do you wanna go swimming?"

"Yeah sure I was just heading out there myself."

"Alright well then let me get my suit on. I just bought a new one." With that Mac headed upstairs to change.

Brian turned to Nick. "So tell me. How did it go?"

Nick sighed. "Imagine a day with Satin..."

"Aw come on Buddy it couldn't have been that bad?"

"We fought constantly and then she decided to be all nice to me and bring up a certain picture she saw in my room last night."

"Who Mackenzie? Ya mean the picture with Abbey right? Nick things will get better I promise and she was probably just wondering who she is and the story behind it. Besides I know something you don't know." Brian said the last part in a sing song voice. "Anyway when she gets down just tell her I'll be out in the pool."

"Sure"

Just then Mackenzie walked into the room. "Hey where's Bri at?"

"Outside." Was all he said before walking up to his room.

---------------

"So how was Nick when he was a baby? Do you even remember that far?" Brian asked already knowing who Mac really was.

"Yeah I do. He was very sloppy and always throwing his food."

"Ahh something's never change." Brian laughed. "Anyway enough about him lets talk about you. Tell me more all I really know is your name and that you used to live in Florida. Well, I know about Nick too but that doesn't count."

Mac smiled. "Well, I'm twenty-two and moved here when I was 13 but I lived in San Francisco and went to college there but had a little mishap and ended up here at the Carter's. They took me in when I had nowhere else to go."

"Oh what happened in school? If you don't mind me asking."

Mackenzie thought about it for a second and then decided to tell him. It's not like it's too bad. "Well, I wasn't the greatest in school and I got dropped for my grades. It's no big deal really college just wasn't right for me. I was majoring in Web Design in you were wondering."

"Oh well going into computers is a really good job no matter what you do with them. There's lot's of money in it. So then you ended up here? I'm sorry to hear that. Not about living with the Carter's but ya know.." Brian laughed and Mac noded.

"Yeah I know what you mean." 'I can't help but wonder what is going though that boys head. He is a cutie though and very sweet.' Mac smiled again.

"Okay back to Nick when do you think you will tell him?" Brian asked.

"Tell Nick what?" Nick had just walked in upon hearing that last question.
