Jayne's First Day

It was a new day, and Jayne was feeling nervous. More elephants than butterflies were in her stomach. It was her first day at a new assignment, and it was so weird. She was posted at Cheyenne Mountain, a place she had assumed was only fictional... Boy, did she watch too much sci fi TV! To her, this place was always the home of the Stargate project. But, she had been assigned here for some top secret project or other, and whatever it might be it still made her nervous, even if it wasn't a patch on her favorite TV show.

She was met at the entrance by a stereotypically military security guard: face unwavering from that 'I know only my job' look that shouted out to Jayne that he needed a life. Ah well, some people just weren't cut out for what she did: he was probably happy being a security guy.

As she was escorted into the complex, she passed by at least a dozen doors that bore warnings of radioactivity or hazardous materials. Her hands itched to find out what they were, but she rationalized they were probably only marked that way to keep out nosy passers-by. The lift she entered was cold and functional, but she was used to it. Ah, the military life... It felt like she had been travelling in this lift forever! How far exactly was she going down? Of course, the junior man, probably and airman or something, was prattling on about her new position, but she preferred to get the official gab from her new CO, General Lars. They finally reached the designated floor, and she thanked the annoying man. She knew from his now downcast look he wasn't permitted to enter this level. She was met by yet more security and lead down to the General's office.

The General's induction was uncharacteristically brief, and Jayne began to suspect something. She peered at him suspiciously but not so much that he would notice. She watched as he clicked off his intercom and pulled the plug on the phone. Ah, she thought. Now down to business!

He pulled out a file from his copious desk and handed it to her. He smiled a brief military smile.

"Captain Smith," he said, and she glowed at the fact she had such a rank, "this is your real reason for being draughted into here."

She flipped open the file and gasped in shock as she saw its contents. It was like an episode review of Stargate SG-1. Except there were fewer pictures of Michael Shanks and Richard Dean Anderson...

"Sir, with all due respect, I came here to work on a scientific project not..."

"Not what captain?" he said, almost purring in a satisfied tone. She looked up at him, startled. "You were brought here to work on the Stargate project," he said. So matter of fact, so simple so...

"The what?!" she said, completely bowled over in surprise. Ok girl, you've finally cracked...

"This is the purpose of this installation. We are using the 'Gate recovered in Giza..."

And Jayne was in a daze. Gate... here..? Ohmygod, Ohmygod...

He could obviously see her skepticism and stood up, motioning towards the door. She could faintly hear an alarm blaring in the background, and he lead her out of the door.

"Sounds like you're going to get a glimpse to show you my point," he said.

She meekly followed him out, allowing herself to be lead. If this was the guys from university playing trick on her....

But there it was. Big and round and... forming a wormhole. But how could this be?

Four people ran through the wormhole as it shut down. They pulled off their hats and Jayne could see that on of them had a marking on his head just like Teal'c did... This was too much!

One of the team members bounded up to where she and the general stood, and grinned broadly. Don't tell me thought Jayne. Colonel...

"O'Neill, this is Captain Jayne Smith. She has transferred from the UK to work here," said the General.

The person who was looking at her didn't even look like Richard Dean Anderson. He was too young, for a start. "Well Captain, I guess this is pretty much of a shock to you!" he said, a twinkle in his eye. "Perhaps you'd like me to explain to her General?" Both pairs of eyes focused on her.

"Well Colonel, since she is going to join your team, I suppose you should."

The Colonel grinned again and lead her away from the 'Gate room and towards what she assumed was his office. Once there, he pushed a load of junk off one of the seats and motioned for her to sit down. He flopped into his seat behind the desk and put his feet up.

"So," he said, looking at her. "What do you think?"

She looked around the room before focusing on him again. "I think that someone is playing a big joke on me!" she said. "But I suppose you'll tell me otherwise?" He looked at her with devilish eyes.

"Well, you know that film they did a while back? Our last CO's idea. If we made such a public view, then perhaps people would think... 'oh, its just science fiction'." He looked at her pointedly. "Just what you're doing right now huh? Well, someone saw us when we found the second gate in the Arctic circle," he grinned again, "So we had to blame it on something. Special effects seemed perfect. Hence, Stargate the series!"

At this point someone else entered the office and sat down on the floor near to the desk. The Colonel grinned and pulled a bottle out from a drawer.

"Teal'c!" he said, grinning down at what Jayne supposed was a Jaffa. "Here's our new team member, Captain Smith." He held out a glass of Jack Daniels to her. "That sounds better than Captain Carter anyway..."

She looked around and settled down. Despite being thrown into this nonsense world and being persuaded that is wasn't a science fiction series, her only thought was to wonder what Daniel Jackson really looked like...

The End
