The Ride
By: Stachy
And JD. If Ezra lived through this he was going to kill JD. The
boy would not be safe anywhere!
If he lived through this...Jeesh! He saw his life flash before
his eyes. After a moments reflection he decided that overall, with a few
small exceptions, it had been pretty darn good. But, now it was over. Oh,
my gosh, he had never made out a will. He simply could not let just any
old Tom, Dick, or Harry have his car, his wardrobe, or his secret collection
of comic books. He supposed that all his belongings would go to his mother.
And she would squander them away, not appreciating how much they meant
to him. He hoped his friends remembered him fondly. His friends. He finally
makes some decent friends and now he is going to lose them. All because
of some stupid fool stunt he was talked into doing. It occurred to him
that perhaps he should say a prayer, since his time was nearly up. What
was that one about the Shepard? He’d heard Josiah recite it several times,
but for some reason he couldn’t think of any of the words. Oh well, not
that it would make any difference in his case. He was done for. He wondered
what kind of suit he would be buried in. That is if they managed to find
his body. He would probably be lost forever. Finally, his days of living
carelessly were going to catch up to him. He was gone.
“Ezra?”
Was that a voice he could hear? Maybe he was delirious, now too.
“Ezra!” there it was again, a tad more insistent this time.
“Ezra. The ride’s over.” Ezra pried his eyes open and chanced a meek
look around. He saw JD standing over him looking torn between amusement
and concern. “The rides over,” he repeated,
“Are you O.K?” Amusement won out as a smile somehow slipped past his
defenses.
“I’m fine.” Ezra managed to get out. He stood, planning to gather up as much of his dignity as he good and make a graceful exit. But, the only thing he managed to do was slump to the floor. JD grabbed for him and bodily hauled him out of the car.
Nathan, who had been waiting at the foot of the ride quickly saw Ezra’s predicament and sat him down on the nearest bench. “Put your head between your knees.” He instructed.
Ezra obeyed, feeling the lightheadness start to fade.
“What happened?” Chris barked as he approached with Vin, Josiah, and Buck tailing behind. The latter happily eating cotton candy.
“I don’t know.” JD admitted. “He just kind of froze when we got to the top.” He motioned behind him to the Ferris wheel which was at this moment carrying people up and around the huge wheel that was it’s center.
“My life flashed before my eyes.” Ezra mumbled miserably, his head still
hanging between his knees.
Nathan’s attempt as stoicism failed miserably, “I’d say Ezra here is
afraid of heights.” he diagnosed.
“I never was before.” Ezra objected, leaning back against the bench.
“Have you ever been on a Ferris wheel before?” Josiah asked.
Ezra shook his head. No.
“Well then.” Nathan said.
“I sure as hell am not getting on that thing again.” He announced, grumpily “or any other ride for that matter.”
“Ah, come on Ez,” JD complained, “I still need someone to go on the Zipper with me.” Ezra shook his head. “Vin?” JD turned to look pleadingly at Vin.
Vin stared at JD for a long moment, his face carefully blank, before turning smoothly on his heel and striding away. Chris smirked, then ducked his head and headed after Vin. The rest of the guys quickly joined him leaving JD standing in front of the ferris wheel.
“Wait, Guys.” He pleaded jogging after them, “Come on, it’s not that bad. We are the Magnificent Seven after all!... Hey! Guys?”
