The Eyes of a Child

They enter the world gooey, covered with stuff,
not knowing that life can sometimes be rough.
They take their first nourishment from the breast of a mom,
their first sense of love - from crying to calm.
Look at their fingers, and look at their toes,
look at their face and check out their nose.
They'll never be again - as small as right now,
look what you've done - and take a big bow.
Hold them in your arms, and cradle them tight,
allow them to believe - each day will be bright.
They coo and gurgle while in your arms,
keep them warm and safe - show them no harm.
First they crawl - and then they walk,
that babble of now - will someday be talk.
Teach them well and give them your heart,
these small things today - are the biggest part.
They'll grow up so fast,
and will sometimes forget,
all you've done for them past,
but have no regret.
Someday they will leave - never saying good-byes,
all you've given before - reflects in their eyes.
Look deep in those eyes - and always be mild,
the innocence will show -
through the eyes of a child.
