DETAILS on The Compleat I Hate to Cook Book
by Peg Bracken, Hilary Knight (Illustrator)
Value Priced at: $9.99
Hardcover - 288 pages
REVIEW:
Some people are born to bake, boil, and lovingly tend to food, and they do it willingly. Then there are those among us who are born to burn, break, and destroy food--and would rather pull out our own wisdom teeth than have to cook a meal. For these anti-cooks, Peg Bracken has been offering advice, and dare it be said, creating recipes since the 1970s. The Compleat I Hate to Cook Book combines Bracken's earlier work, the infamous I Hate to Cook Book along with its two successors. The emphasis is on cheap, simple, "cut as many corners and spend as little time in the kitchen as humanly possible" foods. With such lovely names (Shuttemup Cookies, Fat Man's Shrimp, A Puffy Prune Whip), even naysayers will be curious. Fancy ingredients are replaced by cans of condensed soup, baked beans, and crushed corn flakes. Three-page recipes are traded for short, snappy, and simple instructions. Bracken hasn't forgotten these health-conscious times either: in a chapter entitled "Some of My Best Friends Are Fat," she concocts easy recipes for Skinny Meatloaf and a rather tasty 22 Calorie Banana Whip, which coincidentally contains just 22 calories! This book comes highly recommended for kitchen phobics the world over. --Naomi Gesinger

Simple recipes and funny!
This book was a joy to read. I used to wake up my husband laughing and when he'd ask what I was reading and I'd say "a cook book", he'd doubt my sanity. I remember especially "slug-a-bed stew". It's great fun for all cooks, and most of all - lazy ones - like me! --This text refers to the paperback edition of this title.

Muffins and quick breads are no longer just for breakfast I have gone to great lengths to create over one hundred new muffin recipes and over fifty quick bread (little loaves) recipes for this book. For too long this great baked items has been reserved for a breakfast or snack menu. Now with the creation of the new recipes, these items can be used with any meal of the day. Every item in the book has been kitchen tested twice. The first time to test the recipes for accuracy in the kitchen, and the second by a non-baking, non-cooking person. Then they were also put to the test a third time when every items was prepared so the photographer could take the pictures used in the book. For the first time, starting with this book, an autographed bookplate will be available to everyone who asks for one. Write to the email address below for details.

A great collection of easy quick breads and muffin recipes. As I write this, a batch of Orange Marmalade Muffins (page 213), are finishing in my oven. I have searched for a very long time for a comprehensive collection of muffin recipes. This collection is a real treat. With recipes ranging from 100 Year Old Muffins to Zucchini-And-Sweet-Rye Muffins with Olives, there truly are recipes in the book for everyone.
One of the many features of this book that is delightful, is the addition of sauces, spreads and toppings to enhance many of the final products. For instance, the Chicken-Rice Muffins with Vegtables (page 91), offers an easy Cucmber Dill Sauce recipe to enhance the flavors of these unusual taste treats.
Along with the easy to make muffin recipes are recipes for scones, cobblers (just like Grandma's), biscuits (try the Patriotic Biscuits with cranberries and blueberries - page 268), waffles, coffes cakes, doughnuts, fritters, traditional quick breads, pancakes and popovers. Quite a piece of work, this!
Each recipe has a color photograph of the finished product to assist you in the very difficult task of actually making a choice of which recipe to bake. Each page contains only two recipes that are easily read, due mainly to the no-nonsense instructional style of the recipes. Anyone can do these recipes.
By the way, the Orange Marmalade muffins have finished and are now cooling on racks - they look and taste fantastic!
Thank you Mr. Gillespie and Ms. Young for this baking treasure.

REVIEW:
Health and Fitness Editor's Recommended Book
The subtitle to this book--"150 Easy Ways to Get Strong, Feel Great, and Look Your Best"--is a little misleading, especially since author Gary Null actually lists 154 tips; there are no easy ways to get strong; and the strength-training information is the book's weakest section, giving confusing and sometimes inaccurate advice. The book is strongest in nutrition, lifestyle, and aerobic-exercise advice, and will probably be most useful to someone who's trying to break free from a lifetime of bad health habits, rather than a person who regularly eats well and exercises.
From aerobics to zinc, the strategies in this book cover the full range of health and fitness, including diet, nutrition, exercise, vitamins and minerals, body image and alternative health. Each of the entries begins with a basic tip, such as "steam your vegetables to retain vitamins," or "think Bs and Cs (broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage and cauliflower) for cancer-fighting nutrition." Gary Null then explains each tip, showing readers what the benefits are and why its important. Some other topics covered include: proper breathing for energy and calmness, how to satisfy a sweet tooth without sugar, stress-busting techniques and much more.
Synopsis:
